POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (PGCE)
nA route into teaching if you already have a degree
n This course mainly focuses on developing your teaching skills, and not on the subject you intend to teach
n LJMU offers some PGCE subject conversion courses
TAUGHT MASTERS (MA, MSc, MRes)
n Builds upon your undergraduate knowledge and skills
n Can be studied 12 months full time, or two years part time
n Opportunity to follow specialist option modules based on your own interests
n Combination of taught modules, coursework and a dissertation (an extensive piece of work that will allow you to research a particular topic in depth)
n Some courses are designed for students with little or no academic experience in the subject area
MASTER OF RESEARCH (MRes)
n 60% of this course is focused around your individual research project work making this the ideal route for people wishing to pursue a research career
n A qualification in its own right or the basis for a doctoral programme (PhD)
n You will be assigned a dedicated academic mentor, who will become your Director of Studies should you progress to a PhD programme
MPhil
n Requires competence in conducting independent enquiry as well as the use of appropriate research methods and techniques
n Can be completed between one and four years depending on whether you are a full or part time student
PhD
n You will be expected to show mastery of a specialist field and to have made an original, personal contribution to the understanding of a problem, to the advancement of knowledge or to the generation of new ideas
n Normally takes between two and six years to complete depending on your mode of
study
