Learning technologies are transforming the student learning experience. Here’s just one example of how technology is enabling students from around the UK to study at LJMU from the comfort of their own homes.
Thanks to LJMU’s Advanced Paediatric and Neonatal Practice (APNP) programme,
the
University is a centre of excellence for paediatric advanced practitioner training. This new role is crucial to the modernisation of children’s services in the NHS and by using WIMBA Classroom, LJMU has been able to recruit health professionals from as far afield as the Shetlands, Portsmouth, Northern Ireland and Norwich.
“We are exploiting the potential of the internet to open up access to health professionals everywhere,” says clinician and APNP tutor Katie Barnes. All students attend a two-day technical induction at LJMU, giving them a chance to become familiar with using the technology and meet other people on the course. Examinations also take place at LJMU. “This isn’t distance learning,” stresses Katie. “It’s a mode of delivery that offers students a
choice. They can come into the University for classes or they can take part in live face-to-face teaching using this web-based teleconferencing technology while they are at home, at work or even on holiday.”
From a tutor’s point of view, Katie admits that using WIMBA Classroom is not for the faint hearted, though delivering WIMBA sessions is a skill you can develop. Delivery has been made easier thanks to the development of a dedicated WIMBA room in the Tithebarn
Building. The Faculty’s media team are currently improving the sound system so that class discussions can be transmitted more clearly.
Students obviously love using WIMBA classroom as they nominated Katie for one of the Liverpool Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Awards and she won the Best Use of Technology in the Teaching Category in 2010.
