TARGETED SUPPORT
LJMU’s Assessment Room offers students with disabilities and additional support needs a discrete, fully accessible and welcoming space where they can test out a range of different furniture, equipment and technologies based on their own specific requirements. Assessments are carried out in support of the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) scheme, which is designed to help meet the extra costs students can face as a direct result of a disability, ongoing health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia. Students can be awarded funds each year to help pay for specialist equipment as well as non-medical helpers, such as note-takers, mentors, personal assistants or readers.

“LJMU helped me apply for my Disabled Students Allowance. I was supported by teaching and other staff and feel more prepared for the
world of work.” Ashish Prabhu, MA Journalism
the clock is ticking
Most postgraduate students don’t have the luxury of just being able to focus on their studies; work, family and life just get in the way, with the result that sometimes it can feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. Martyn Daniel Jones, who’s enrolled on LJMU’s Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture, has this to say on the importance of time management:
“It is crucial to separate university work from home life to prevent oneself from becoming overwhelmed with work. Inevitably they overlap,” he says, “however knowing what is needed for deadlines and keeping on top of all modules is key to knowing how much time you can give to each area.
“I decided to approach university work with the time management of real world work, applying the 9-5 idea. Structuring my day in this way ensures I eat well and don't lose sleep. I also find that my university work is far more efficient during those hours. Freeing up time for hobbies such as playing football and keeping active is fundamental as is keeping a balance between enjoying living and studying for the course.”
If you are worried about how you’ll balance studying alongside your work, life and social commitments, please contact LJMU. A postgraduate qualification can be challenging but thanks to our extensive range of full and part-time courses, LJMU is sure to be able to offer you a solution that enables you to succeed on all fronts.
