RHINO FAMILY HEALTH CHECKS

Following the birth of a baby white rhino from ‘Piglet’, a 17 year old rhino who carried her offspring for an incredible gestation period of 17 months in the womb, Knowsley Safari Park is working with LJMU researchers to carry out health checks on the rhino family using a thermal camera. This is part of a research project by LJMU’s Natural Sciences Department, which uses the same technology as airport cameras to detect if passengers are showing signs of flu.

SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES

The Built Environment and Sustainable

Technologies

(BEST) Research Institute carries out research that is much broader

than just

buildings, covering recycling, waste water, aggregates, air quality; everything linked to the environment. “The blending of traditional built environment research with innovative and highly advanced areas of engineering, such as microwave sensing, makes the BEST Institute unique in terms of its scope and quality of work,” says Institute Director Prof Ahmed Al-Shamma’a.

22 LJMU CRIME AND SOCIETY

The Centre for the Study of Crime, Criminalisation and Social Exclusion recently completed research on the controversial Section 30 Dispersal Orders which can be used to disperse groups or gatherings of two or more people aged under 16. A key finding was that young people rarely feel consulted about these orders despite their use as a means of social control. To help ensure that young people can get their views heard, LJMU hosted a ‘Dispersed’ Young People’s Conference to disseminate findings from the research. “As academics we have a duty to ensure that our research is accessible, not only for other scholars, but for professionals and community groups who can make use of our work,” says Dr Yates, Head of Criminology at LJMU.
