If you’ve ever thought that your CV lacked killer credentials then LJMU’s globally unique World of Work (WoW®

Initially developed by LJMU to help its undergraduates get on the professional career ladder, more and more postgraduate students and researchers are engaging with the programme as they realise that they too need to demonstrate more than just their academic credentials in order to succeed professionally.

Prior to starting her MBA, Natalya Grinko (pictured on previous page), who is originally from Russia, worked as a teacher and so was already proficient in many of the areas covered in the three WoW skills: Self Awareness, Organisational Awareness and Making Things Happen.

LJMU is confident that these skills are exactly what top companies are looking for in graduate employees. That’s because the programme has been shaped and steered by FTSE 100 companies and leading business organisations, including Airbus, CBI, Ford Europe, NHS, GKN Aerospace, Marks and Spencer, Siemens and Sony.

Asked whether she shares the University’s confidence, Natalya gave WoW a resounding thumbs up, saying: “It's a very interesting process because it covers so

many skills and competencies. It helps you reveal your skills and at the end of the process you end up a much more confident person, which is important not only for work, but in everyday life as well.”

Importantly, WoW enabled Natalya to have her existing and new skills verified and professionally accredited, proving her ability to future employers. That’s because more than 100+ local employers have taken the time to be trained as WoW skills verifiers. Thanks to this support it is possible to give students, like Natalya, invaluable ‘real-world’ interview experience in the sector they want to work in after they graduate. This is the final stage of the WoW programme and crucially it is these employers, not LJMU, who judge whether or not students have reached the necessary standards to receive their WoW certificate.

“The interview was very encouraging and at the same time the questions were quite tough and made you think a lot,” adds Natalya. “I did years of work experience before the Masters and I still found the WoW programme useful but for those who have gone straight from Bachelors to Masters this is even more crucial.”

postgraduates are highly prized by business and the public sector postgraduate research skills are critical for tackling major business challenges and driving innovation and growth

Thanks to LJMU’s Postgraduate Employability Programme, research students are encouraged to think more creatively about their future and maximise their skills for a range of careers outside research or academia
