If you’ve been out of education for a while the thought of returning to a classroom let alone tackling postgraduate-level study can be daunting. The good news is you can get lots of support and advice both before and after you enrol at LJMU to ensure you reach your full potential.
Myka Heard graduated from university two decades ago, and admits she worried that she might not make the grade after enrolling on LJMU’s MA in Sport Management. “I last went to university 20 years ago. This is a very different experience. I have a lot less time for one thing, I work part time as a teaching assistant and I am a single parent” she says. “When we began the Masters I kept looking round at everyone thinking they probably had more right to be there than me.”
MA Criminal Justice student Sophie Smith had similar worries, despite having graduated just three years prior to starting her LJMU course. “I found myself feeling quite overwhelmed with the prospect of returning to higher education. I worried that I had left it too late,” she explains. “I was very wrong. The transition couldn’t have gone smoother, the workload isn’t as heavy as I had expected and my tutors are extremely supportive. The lecture classes are small as well so there was a real one-to-one teaching bond from day one. I settled in right from the word go.”
Myka also felt more at ease following a confidence-building result for her first assignment. “I knew the big test for me
would be getting my result for my first piece of work,” she explains. “I went to see my course tutor the week before they were due out, saying how worried I was that maybe I wasn't good enough. He was very supportive and talked me through my worries. I got a much better mark than I was expecting and it’s helped me have more confidence.”
She continues: “The support from the tutors has been fantastic and I'm really enjoying the course. It is hard work, but it's great to get my brain going again. It's been good to make new friends too, and we all try to support each other. Apart from a little panic every now and then, I'm loving it.”
