Mars Hill Wolf Ridge booms for second straight year

By Matt Tate Te ski business has been good to

Wolf Ridge. Te Mars Hill ski lodge has seen

a record number for visitors for the second straight year, exceeding last year’s high mark by 20 percent by mid-February. “We are really coming into our-

selves. We’re building loyalty,” said co-owner Rick Bussey. While the abundance of wintry

precipitation has not hurt the past two seasons, Bussey credits an ag- gressive marketing campaign that has targeted potential visitors in ar- eas such as Atlanta and Knoxville, Tenn. “It has really proved fruitful,” he

said. Te business has been so strong,

in fact, Wolf Ridge had to turn away skiers because they ran out of park- ing during two recent weekends. Bussey said the resort is consid-

ering adding a third lodge for the 2011-2012 season. Currently, there is one at the base of the mountain and on top of the ridge. A third lodge could potentially allow the resort to accommodate anywhere from 30,000-50,000 more skiers a year. In the recent years, the resort has

added five new ski runs, two lifts and 48 slope-side townhomes and cabins. While Bussey admitted the re-

sort’s real estate development has not been immune to the ills of a de- pressed economy, recreationally, it has seen several banner seasons. “We have been blessed,” he said. Wolf Ridge is located five min-

utes off Interstate 26 near the North Carolina/Tennessee border. Because of the relative convenience such a location provides, Bussey said that while there are several advanced runs on the mountain, the resort has been ramping up its offerings for young and old skiers of varying abilities. “We have great terrain from be-

ginner to advanced,” he said. Wolf Ridge is offering $3 off lift

tickets for Weaverville residents through the end of February. For more on the resort, go to skiwolfrid- genc.com.
