Leicester Family, friends remember Young Family and friends are remem-
bering a beloved schoolteacher and longtime Leicester resident. Kathy Young died at the age of
56 on Jan. 30 after being diag- nosed with breast cancer less than two weeks prior. She taught the majority of her
career at Leicester Elementary School, retiring in 2008 after two of her grandchildren completed their first year of school. Even in retirement, Young was
still very much a teacher at heart and worked continuously with her younger preschool grandchildren. Because she loved to read, she would spend a lot of time reading to the kids, according to daughter Amanda Marlowe. A devout Christian, Young at-
tended Western Chapel Method- ist on South Turkey Creek and was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church on Newfound Road for the last 22 years. She sang in the choir

and helped with the Awana chil- dren’s program and vacation bible school. “I will miss being with Kathy in
the choir. Te last time we spoke we were laughing and enjoying each other. It will be hard to have some-
one else next to me in the choir. She was such a faithful member of the church and will truly be missed,” said friend Freda Nodine. Marlowe said she never lost faith
when she was diagnosed with can- cer and leaned on her spirituality to pull her through. “What moves through me is a si-
lence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day. I will remember not just that Kathy died, but that she lived and her life gave memories that I will never forget,” said friend Tammy Grogan. She enjoyed the simple things like
riding horses and spending time at the lake, Marlowe said. Young also loved to read and it didn’t matter where she was, she could always get lost in a book. Son James Clay Young said, “I
will always remember her sitting in the front of the boat with her sun- glasses on reading her book, always wanting to be close to the water but not always in it.” She was born Kathy Gail Wilson
to Maxine and Clay Moore Wilson Jr. on April 17, 1954. She grew up in Stokesdale, NC. After graduat- ing high school in 1972, she at- tended the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and received her teaching degree in 1975. She started as a substitute teach-
er at Johnston Elementary and then after a short time at Leices- ter she worked at West Buncombe Elementary during Marlowe’s first two years of school before moving them both back to Leicester El- ementary. Young loved shopping and en-
joyed shopping excursions with her sister at least once a month, Mar- lowe added. “My mother had cowboy boots,
shoes, and purses in every color imaginable. Her favorite color has always been blue. I think about how I used to envy those boots when I was younger. I think of her up in the choir in one of her denim dresses and in her boots singing and winking down at me,” she said. “Blue flowers were placed in her choir chair these past two weeks to honor her. I think of the heavenly choir she is singing in now and even with tears in my eyes I can’t help but swing my leg and tap my feet to the music as she always did.”
