Get Involved PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
are no different; we think you should get involved also! But why? What does the GHBA offer, and what’s in it for you?
P
For one thing, we offer variety. Did you know that the GHBA has 16 councils and committees that meet almost every month? The various groups are: Associate Council, Bay Area Builders Association, Codes and Standards Committee, Custom Builders Council, Developers Council, Education Committee, Green Building Committee, Government Affairs Committee, Membership & Ambassadors Committee, Montgomery County Builders & Developers Division, MultiFamily Council, Remodelors Council, Sales and Marketing Council, and the Volume Builders Council.
Each group appeals to a different segment of our membership. What might be surprising is the fact that there are synergies and common ground between groups. For instance, I like attending the Government Affairs Committee which covers topics that are also of interest to the Developers Council, Volume Builders, Custom Builders, etc. Some members like to attend the Montgomery County and Bay Area Divisions because they work in those locations and enjoy the focus on their geographic areas. But these groups still have common interests with the other councils. The Sales and Marketing Council, of course, appeals to those in sales and marketing, but you will find guest speakers and discussions about marketing at some of the other group meetings also. The point is that although each group has its own

unique focus, there are a broad range of topics discussed.
What’s in it for you? First, you will be better prepared to do business within the community.
You have the chance
to make personal connections with people who in the long run will provide you with more business or will become better suppliers. Second, I have found that friendships develop with people involved with GHBA. You already start with something in common and I have seen long term relationships develop
from those common interests. Third, you will always come away with something you did not know before you attended.
To maximize your investment, do more than just attend the meetings—get involved! Encourage your employees to get involved also. Each group is always looking for volunteers to be on a special task force, help out with an event, be on the board of directors or even be on the leadership ladder. You will get back much more than you give. The time spent is an investment that pays off.
