REMODELORS COUNCIL NEWS
industry—and virtually every other— seems to have lasted so long that we’ve almost become accustomed to it. Though not impacted as deeply in Houston as most of the rest of the country, we have felt it and continue to have challenges.
Are You Ready for Good Times? T
he recession that has affected the home building and remodeling
The good news is that there are indications that the economy is improving; and more importantly, optimism and confidence are on the rise. I talk to other remodelers, architects, designers as well as people from other industries; everyone expects to see better days in 2011. Prior to remodeling, I worked in the refining and petrochemical engineering business for many years. My friends in that industry, crucial to the Houston economy, are telling me that they are starting to see increased hiring after being in the doldrums for the last two years. Energy companies are starting to do more exploration and production and investing in capital projects. All of this bodes well for Houston.
So, after two years and many cost- cutting measures, are you prepared for an upswing? We’re all ready for it, hoping and praying for it; but are we prepared? Most companies in any industry will exercise caution as the turnaround starts, wanting assurances that it is real.

One of the best resources for preparing yourself for an increase in business is your own builders association. Education and networking are invaluable tools
in becoming better in business and sales. The GHBA just published the education course schedule for 2011. The designations offered from the NAHB are one of the few things that can separate you from the masses, and the GHBA offers the gamut of classes for these designations. But whether or not a designation is your goal, you will learn skills that will help you reach your professional goals. I have found that not only is the course information beneficial, but the opportunity to share ideas with others in the class is an added bonus.
Networking can likewise provide a wealth of information. When I joined the Remodelors Council nine years ago, the last thing I expected was to find so many individuals willing to share their experiences, both positive and not so positive. Joining the council was the best thing I’ve done for my business and myself. The members of this organization are more than eager to help others.
There are more opportunities for networking than most people would be able to fit into their calendar. There are council monthly luncheon meetings, monthly networking events, Sandcastle Competition, GHBA events like Extravaganza, Rally Day, cook-offs, golf tournaments, etc. Two such events in March are the Remodelors Council Networking at Thorntree on March 22 and the Associate Council Golf Tournament on March 23. Join in, have fun and meet people. Make 2011 a great year for yourself.
