Dundee is an excellent place to study medicine, both for the high quality of the teaching programme and for the facilities available. Problem-orientated, student-centred and community-based, our medical course closely follows recommendations for ‘Tomorrow’s Doctors’ made by the professional governing body for medicine in the UK, the General Medical Council.
In Dundee you have the opportunity to study medicine in a fully integrated medical school and hospital with extensive teaching and research facilities, which serve both teaching and clinical needs. Ninewells Hospital and Medical School is the centre of many areas of pioneering research in cancer, keyhole surgery, heart disease, drug development, and medical education.
You will be part of a caring community providing healthcare for Tayside, Fife, and further afield, and have access to a wide range of facilities including lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, library, integrated self-teaching area, computer suite and a leading Clinical Skills Centre. A new education facility is being built on the Ninewells Hospital site which will further enhance the quality of our teaching.
teaching and assessment
Dundee Medical School is renowned for leadership and innovation in medical education. The 12 Dundee Learning Outcomes, now adopted by all Scottish medical schools, are:
What the doctor is able to do - ‘doing the right thing’ 1. Competence in clinical skills 2. Competence in practical procedures 3. Competence to investigate a patient 4. Competence in patient management 5. Competence in health promotion and disease prevention 6. Competence in communication 7. Competence in handling and retrieval of information
How the doctor approaches practice - ‘doing the thing right’ 8. An understanding of basic and clinical sciences and underlying principles
9. Appropriate attitudes, ethical stance and legal responsibilities
10. Appropriate decision-making skills, clinical reasoning and judgement
The doctor as a professional - ‘The right person doing it’ 11. An understanding of the doctor’s role in the health service
12. An aptitude for personal development
Approximately 100 core clinical problems provide a vital focus for learning: in Phase 1, they are used to illustrate key principles; in Phase 2, they provide a problem-orientated approach based on the body systems; and in Phase 3, they define the competencies needed by newly qualified doctors.
Clinical experience with direct patient contact is introduced in Year 1. A feature of the curriculum is that you spend over 10% of your time in the community: this is of value whether your eventual career is to be in General Practice or hospital based.
A well equipped Clinical Skills Centre provides the opportunity to develop the skills of communication, physical examination and practical procedures in a safe environment. Sophisticated models and simulated patients are regularly used.
A recognised and commended feature in the Dundee curriculum is the use of study guides. Many of the study guides have been adapted to electronic format within a sophisticated web-based curriculum map.
