Maximising Learning and Studying


How often have you read a textbook then realised you haven’t taken in a single word? Or revised for exams, wasting hours because you couldn’t remember crucial facts? How often have you been asked a question and your mind has gone completely blank?

Memory is simply the process of storage and retrieval of information in the brain. Your subconscious mind can recall everything that’s happened within your awareness, whether that is a memory of a past event, the location of a misplaced item, learned study material, or any information that you need at a specific time for a specific purpose.

The Three Types of Human Remembering:


1. Sensory memory : Seeing, smelling, feeling, hearing and tasting.


2. Motor skill memory : Remembering how to perform physical activities like driving, playing sport, dancing, etc.


3. Memory of words, ideas and concepts: The most vital and complex, yet the least retentive type of memory.


The ‘Three Rs’ of Remembering:


1. REGISTERING - Taking note of what you want to remember. (You cannot recall something you haven’t taken notice of.)


2. RETAINING - the process of storing information after it has been registered.





3. RETRIEVING - the process of getting information from your memory after it has been registered and stored.



