Counting Up the Caffeine – New online app works out your daily caffeine intake
A new interactive online tool has been launched by Coca-Cola Great Britain to help people monitor their daily caffeine intake. The Caffeine Counter is suitable for both health professionals and patients.
www.coca-cola.co.uk/health/caffeine-counter.html can be downloaded to your desktop and tells you the caffeine content of many popular foods and drinks and can calculate total daily caffeine consumption.
Endorsed by pregnancy health charity, Tommy’s, the online tool is particularly useful for mums-to-be as it highlights the Food Standards Agency recommended caffeine limits during pregnancy.
Jacqui Clinton, Health Campaigns Manager at Tommy’s [
Tommys.org], said: “It is very important to monitor your daily caffeine intake when pregnant. We find caffeine in many different foods and our daily intake can add up quite quickly without us realising. That is why we are delighted to support this tool for pregnant women to help ensure that they are effectively managing their daily caffeine intake and giving their baby the best start in life.”
In Coca-Cola, diet Coke and Coke Zero, caffeine is used as a flavouring rather than a stimulant. Caffeine used in this way contributes to the overall flavour, adding a slight bitterness and working well with both sugar and sweeteners to provide an enjoyable taste. Caffeine is a widely occurring ingredient found naturally in tea, coffee and cocoa and can also be man-made.

EPAX AS confirmed that its DHA-rich 1050 TG formula is currently being studied for its potential effect on metabolic syndrome and its associated conditions. BIOCLAIMS, a scientific programme that supports European university researchers and is funded by the Seventh EU (European Union) Framework Programme, will oversee a series of studies conducted through 2013 to determine what role marine-derived DHA plays on health factors such as obesity, raised blood pressure and triglyceride levels as well as prevalence of insulin resistance (a precursor to type II diabetes).
The programme’s first study has commenced under the direction of professor Aldona Dembinska-Kiec of the University of Poland, Krakow, EPAX also confirmed. Dembinska-Kiec has designed a double-blind, placebo- controlled study involving 300 patients to analyse several metabolic syndrome health markers.
