Rewards for environmental champions

THIRTEEN Tonbridge and Malling residents have been honoured for going the extra mile to improve their neigh- bourhoods. Mayor, Cllr Sue Murray, pre- sented certificates to the win- ners of the borough council's Environmental Champions scheme. They were rewarded for a

range of efforts including litter- picking, work as a street moni- tor, producing artwork to promote the Snodland Goes Cleaner campaign, taking part in community days and organ- ising events to raise awareness of environmental issues. Winners were: Jayson Worsfold, of Snod-

land, a graphic designer who has volunteered his time and services to the Snodland Goes Cleaner Campaign. He has pro-

ford Parish Council that villagers had expressed concern at the unsightly appearance of the bricked-upWalnut Tree. Some villagers had referred to it as a potential

site for a community centre but the chairman Cllr Joyce Gadd said the parish council could not take the lead on this. The council did hold some ring-fenced funds and had a building society account book contain-

ing proceeds from fundraising held several years ago.

But the initiative to resurrect this project with further fundraising and grant sourcing must come fromresidents, as had happened with community centres elsewhere in the parish. However, Cllr Gadd said she understood the

On their first visit they picked up seven sacks of litter and have been back regularly, in- cluding during the last school holidays to remove litter from the water when they even fished out a tyre. Toni Matthew, PCSO for Mereworth, is enthusiastic and explores different avenues to get problems solved. She has organised Bash the Trash events with youth clubs, uniform groups and schools and led on a dog fouling campaign with the council. Shawn Joy, 12, Will Smith,

11, Paul Wood, 14, Jamie Brown, 14, Scott Damms, 18, and Jordan Scott, 11, all from Snodland, have been recog- nised for their involvement in the Snodland Goes Cleaner Campaign. All have stepped up to clean various areas of the town in- cluding Nevill Park Lane – sometimes without any help from others. Other winners were Derek Linnet, of Ivy Hatch, Sara Starkey, of Tonbridge, and Veo- lia Environmental employees Darren Stanford and Tommy Hickmott who are street clean- ers in the Tonbridge area.
