Lessons from Victorian days are popular

A DISPLAY of photographs and posters of Snodland in Victorian times proved a great success with local resi- dents. Aimee Pollard, aged five,

who attends St Katherine’s Primary School and whose nursery provided a Christ- mas display, was one of many children who were taught how to make Victorian Christmas cards.

ALTHOUGH Holmesdale Technology Col- lege failed to win £50,000 in the People’s Millions competition in its bid to convert a WorldWar II air raid shelter into a bike and go-kart workshop, the project is not dead. The People’s Millions is a scheme run by

the Big Lottery Fund in partnership with ITV to give worthwhile causes the opportu- nity to win up to £50,000. As reported in

Partnership provides a lot more than hot air

SNODLAND Community Asso- ciation is the latest organisation in the town to receive financial assistance from the Snodland Partnership, with a donation of £2,500 towards air conditioning at the centre. The partnership, which has

given more than £1m to the town, started 12 years ago with just three members, Tonbridge and Malling Council, the town council and Lafarge Cement. Since then it has been joined

by Trenport Investments, Berke- ley Homes, Snodland Chamber of Commerce, Smurfit Kappa Townsend Hook, the Co-opera- tive Society, Southern Housing, Holmesdale Technology College and Perrys Chartered Account- ants.

Chairman Charlie Grayhurst

said most of the money had been spent on town centre im- provements and numerous community projects. The Scouts, Holmesdale

Technology College, Snodland Primary School, all the pre- schools, Christmas lights, hang- ing baskets, the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Trust, dance schools, football and cricket clubs and many other organisations had bene- fited from donations of £100 to £8,000. The Partnership also pro-

vided the community bus, strimmers and a mower for vol- unteers to maintain the grave- yard at Christ Church and the regeneration and upkeep of the wildlife garden in Recreation Avenue. “Any organisation which

wants assistance can contact us on 01634 240228 or get an ap- plication form from the council offices in Waghorn Road,” he said. “We are in the process of applying for charity status and, if successful, wewill be looking to be able to assist even more groups in Snodland.”

making it happen by looking for alternative funding sources,” she said. “There have been many offers of help and support with the conversion of the bunker into a workable store and workshop. These have come from many quarters, including staff of Holmesdale offering their own and their partners’ time, expertise and energy.” The school is applying to Tonbridge and Malling Council for change of use permission. A management team has been

formed to take the project for- ward, chaired by police Sgt Kevin Brigden. It includes Char- lie Grayhurst (Snodland Partner- ship), Anne Moloney (town and borough councillor), Kevin Bush (Snodland Friends and Bikers Club) and Sue Ricketts.
