‘Ernie’ Amos ERNEST John “Ernie” Amos (63), of East Malling, lived lo- cally his whole life. Born in Burham and raised in


Ditton, he defied medical ad- vice to begin work in the build- ing trade and follow a career of manual jobs. He worked on building sites and at Ayles- ford Paper Mill despite some disabilities. Married to


Carol, Ernie was father to Shelly, Becky, Bridie and Letty. Carol said: “ Anyone who


knewErnie would tell you how much he loved his family; everyone he knew loved him. “He had a range of talents and


was really good at making cakes, he made wedding cakes for all of our daughters. He also loved reading, especially true crime books. He could draw and paint very well too.


Andrew’s passion was Mini We will remember “He had to retire early from


work because of his health problems, but he was never short of things to do.” Ernie suffered a blow re-


cently with the death of daugh- ter Shelly and died shortly after her funeral. He leaves his widow, three daughters and 13 grandchildren.


Peter Capeling PETER Capeling (69) was raised and was resident in Snodland for most of his life and spent 20 years running General Build- ing, his own firm. He was known for his atten-


tion to detail and high quality of the finished work. Peter was also active in com- munity work in and around Snodland. Married to Pat, Peter was also known locally as an amateur


SHOPand pub staff have been warned to be on their guard after a spate of mobile phone thefts. Thieves have struck about a dozen times since December at businesses in West Malling, Ton- bridge, Sevenoaks, TunbridgeWells and Swanley. On each occasion at least one man has gone into


the premises and offered to sell a newspaper, The Big Issue or another magazine. The man has put the paper or magazine down, covering a mobile phone that the owner has left on the counter. It is

Andrew Venn ANDREW George Venn (24) grew up in Larkfield, attending schools in Ryarsh and Borough Green before moving on to Maidstone Grammar. Aged 14, he began a 10-year


battle with leukaemia, losing a year of school. Andrew recov- ered to pass A-levels and go to Coventry University where he gained his degree in industrial product design.

A gifted designer and writer.” Andrew’s father, Chris, said: “Andrew will be remembered for battling leukaemia without complaint. He was an inspira- tional character.” There were about 250 people


at the crematorium,with nearly 200 meeting afterwards atWest Malling Golf Club to celebrate Andrew's life. He leaves his parents Chris


and Jackie, brother Stephen and many friends locally, nationally and across the Mini world.

Previous journalistic experience is essential for this part time role based in Bearsted, as you will be joining Downs Mail’s small established editorial team.


You will be undertaking journalism duties, writing


columns on local parish councils and court reports. Knowledge of local government, law, an understanding of our local area and an enthusiasm for Downs Mail’s editorial ethos are key requirements.


The successful candidate will need to be an organised, fast-working team player with a sharp news sense. You will need to be experienced in designing and laying out pages, subbing copy and writing columns and have a proven ability in using Quark Xpress and Adobe Photoshop. A flexible approach to the hours worked will also be required.
