TAKING CARE OF OUR INVESTMENT IN CREATIVE COMMUNITIES HISTORY

The Edmonton Arts Council (EAC) administers public art projects on behalf of the City of Edmonton, including the Percent for Art program, Community Public Art Grants program, transitory public art events and outreach initiatives, and management of the Civic Art Collection.

Edmonton developed a Percent for Art policy in 1991, and revised the policy in 2007 and 2010 to include an expansion of the qualifications for project eligibility. In 2009 an additional suite of supporting Public Art policies were developed to address accession, de-accession, conservation and gifts of public art.

Edmonton City Council approved a Master Plan for Public Art (MAP) in 2008, which outlines a long term plan for public art initiatives in Edmonton. During this year, the Public Art Committee (PAC) was inaugurated. PAC members are leaders and stewards of the program, and are responsible for advocating for the creation and care of high quality public art projects in Edmonton that represent the fullest range of scope for the mediums of public art and representation of a diverse range of artists.

Edmonton’s public art collection includes examples of permanent and transitory art, integrated, discrete, and functional art. The collection includes artwork by preeminent regional and international artists.
