The first major component is public art commissions initiated by the City. Since 1998, more than 25 works have been commissioned, with the majority of them created by local and regional artists.

Notable works in the collection include Dancing Pedestrians, a large bronze work by local artist Jock Hildebrand which was a joint initiative with the Bank of Montreal and installed on the City’s main downtown thoroughfare. Escape to Stella Polaris by Vancouver artists, John Nutter and Thor Erling Sunde is a landmark glass sculpture in Kelowna’s busy airport. The unique Spirit of Kelowna, an installation of 104 bronze medallions on a rammed earth wall in the foyer of City Hall, was the culmination of a yearlong community project inspired and led by local sculptor Geert Maas.

Recent projects include a bear sculpture as part of the redevelopment of Stuart Park on Kelowna’s picturesque downtown waterfront, and an installation on the exterior façade of the H2

O Adventure & Fitness Centre located in Kelowna’s residential Lower Mission area.

The second major component in the public art program is community public art projects. The Public Art Committee created guidelines for Community Public Art in 2006, and awarded its first projects in 2007. Non-profit organizations working with artists may apply annually for up to $10,000 in matching funds to support projects which engage the community in art-making under the guidance of a professional artist. Since 2007 five projects have been completed with three additional projects planned for 2010.

These projects, as well as the creation of several murals, banners, mosaics and other temporary or permanent works, offer special rewards for the ways in which they connect creativity and community. Hundreds of people have participated in these projects over the years and have contributed to a gradual recognition of the value of community-based arts practice for many of the artists involved.
