The Many Styles of Yoga R

by Nancy Mahon

eady to give yoga a try but not sure what styles will interest for you? Looking for new types of yoga? Now, you just need to sift through the endless sea of yoga styles and what they mean to find the different classes you want to try. Below is a condensed version of some yoga styles to help you navigate yourself into the right areas. Many people like to incorporate a variety of styles into their yoga practice so be sure to continuously explore many of the different styles. First, however, let’s review some of the benefits of yoga.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga increases your flexibility, balance and strength. Yoga is not just for flexible people. Inflexible people are the ones that benefit from practicing yoga and are often the ones you will find in yoga classes. It also improves your concentration, patience and focus. By doing yoga consistently, you maintain the benefits. Two times a week allows you to sustain your newfound strength, flexibility and mental benefits. Three times a week is life changing.

Yoga is what you do for yourself. Most people come alone and you will notice with your first class that you are so engrossed with your own practice you won’t even look at what other students are doing. Yoga can also enhance your spiritual practice. Yoga, however, is not a religion. Yoga does not tell you where to direct spirituality or the specific methods by which you should or should not be spiritual. That is left to the personal preference of an individual.

Finding Your Yoga Styles Ashtanga/Power Yoga: Ashtanga and its inspired offspring Power yoga are fast-

paced, intense styles of yoga. With these styles, you will move or flow from one pose to the next. In Ashtanga the order of poses does not vary as it does in Power yoga. Both of these styles of yoga are quite physically demanding and suited for someone who prefers the constant movement of flowing from one pose into the following pose.

Hatha Yoga: In general, Hatha yoga means the physical practice of yoga. All the styles of yoga are in essence Hatha yoga. Classes called Hatha yoga are a good place to start your yoga practice because the classes are often slow-paced and focus on basic poses, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques.
