Places To Go Powis Castle, Welshpool
BUILT some 800 years ago to keep people out Powis Castle now welcomes visitors.
Near continual occupation of the castle, built by a Welsh princess and with magnificent views towards England, has seen it maintained and remodelled.
Now a National Trust property it has remained in the ownership of the Herbert family from 1578 when the property passed to Sir Edward Herbert.
Each generation of the Herbert family has added to the castle’s history and its collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture and tapestries over the years.
A superb collection of treasures from India is displayed in the Clive Museum. The Clive and Powis estates were united when Edward, the son of Robert Clive, the conqueror of India, married Lady Henrietta Herbert in 1784.
The 19th Century State Coach and Livery, the finest in the ownership of the National Trust, is on display in the coach house.
The castle’s gardens are world famous and were laid out under the influence of Italian and French styles. The castle retains its original lead statues, an orangery and an aviary on the terraces. In the 18th century an informal woodland wilderness was created on the opposite ridge.
Powis Castle is one mile south of Welshpool, pedestrian access is from High Street (A490); vehicle route signposted from the main road
