Artbeat Brecon

ARTBEAT Brecon was formed several years ago to market the unique galleries and cultural enterprises within Brecon, a town rapidly becoming a focal point for the creative artists in Mid Wales.

There are 13 members.

Ardent Gallery sell a huge range of original artwork and prints, as well as providing a quality framing service. The gallery showcases works from Timmy Mallet, Sue Howells, Kumar Saraff, John Bird, William Selwyn, John Knapp-Fisher, Gareth Parry, Gillian McDonald, Malcome Chate, Allan Morgan, Peter Evans, Harry Fogg and many more.

Oh! specialise in unusually unusual interiors, accessories and gifts. It’s the perfect place for sculptural vases, platters and lighting. Oh! is the place where natural materials meet un-natural techniques. They also stock new Welsh and local interest books and provide picture framing.

Pen y Fan gallery brings you a selection of the finest art in Wales. An art collector’s haven,

You can’t beat a nice bit of culture

it is an introduction to the leading Welsh artists of today, as well as promoting up and coming young artists. Something for all tastes. Well worth a visit!

Gate Gallery’s Kathryn Roberts has been a glassmaker for 16 years. She has studied and worked in London, Italy and the US. A true traditional artisan, Kathryn lives above the riverside gallery and manufactures her unique glassware in her fully equipped basement glass working studio / workshop.

Morgan on The Struet houses a wonderfully eclectic mix of antiques and collectables for the interior and garden. Visit Martha Morgan for life- size polystyrene Virgin Marys and vintage Grand Prix prints - as seen on BBC’s Antiques Roadtrip.

New recruits to Artbeat Brecon, the Paintpot offers ‘Paint Your Own Pottery’ for children or adults of all ages but that’s not all. There are two floors of gallery space and a coffee shop serving cake and Illy coffee. The Paintpot is housed in three storeys of one of the oldest buildings in the High Street - built in 1589.

Andrew Morton Books offers a staggering selection of second-hand fiction, non-fiction, collectable and special interest books, and is also crammed full of good quality used paperbacks and a fantastic children’s section.

Brecknock Museum has excellent collections of Welsh art, including the work of contemporary artists and rolling exhibitions throughout the year. The Museum is housed in the Old Shire Hall and accordingly a judge and jury can be seen trying a historic case in the courtroom.

Cariad Toys is a family run toyshop in the heart of Brecon stocking a range of tradtional and contemporary toys, games and gifts for children of all ages. Known locally as the wooden toyshop they sell a wide selection of wooden toys including Pintoy, Plan, I’M and John Crane.

Country Life and Welsh Flair is Brecon’s largest Welsh gift shop. Their large range of books, in Welsh and English, makes it Brecon’s largest independent welsh book shop. They are expanding their selection of food and drinks which already includes Penderyn whiskeys and spirits, Caws Cenarth cheese, mustard from the Welsh Mustard Company and their home-made fudge,

Emeralds focuses on craft materials but also stock art supplies and haberdashery. Brands stocked include Joanna Sheen, Stewart Gill, Windsor & Newton and many others. They have a wide range of hand-made papers, papercraft essentials, rubber stamps and most creative materials you could ever need.

Sable and Hogg Gallery has been selling art in Brecon for 25 years. There’s a large selection of original art, limited edition prints and photographs. Sable and Hogg also provide a

Moon Over Watch Cottage by John Knapp-Fisher quality picture framing service.

As well as being a very successful theatre with a year-long programme of exciting and high quality events in arguably the most idyllic setting in Brecon, Theatr Brycheiniog is also home to The Andrew Lamont Gallery. The gallery programmes a wide variety of selling exhibitions ranging from community art group work through to emerging and well established solo artists.

Brecon

THE town boasts two museums, the imposing classical structure of the Brecknock Museum and the pretty red brick Regimental Museum houses the history of the Royal Regiment of Wales.

The town centre Brecknock Museum is considered to be one of the finest small museums in Wales and also boasts a gallery housing contemporary exhibitions.

Discover the history of the county and its rural life, natural history and extremely rare medieval objects discovered on the crannog, or man- made island, at Llangorse Lake.

Housed in the former Brecknock Assizes, the court room has been brought back to life with model figures and a dramatised recording of an actual trial using local people and professional actors including Ted Kelsay, better known as the voice of Joe Grundy in BBC Radio 4’s The Archers.

At the nearby Regimental Museum discover the role of the South Wales Borderers in the battle of Isandhlwana and the defence of Rorke’s Drift which was immortalised in the film Zulu. It’s Zulu War Room tells this compelling story.

The museum is reputed to have the finest collection of weapons to be found in any regimental museum throughout the country and its gun collection traces the evolution of soldiers’ weapons from the 18th Century to the present day. The Barracks, The Watton, Brecon 01874 613310
