Welcome to Mid Wales & The Brecon Beacons

Hay Festival There’s nothing sexier says Peter Florence

FAMOUSLY described by Joseph Heller as ‘a cross between an international conference and a country wedding’, Hay’s special brand of super-smart hanging-out will draw over a hundred thousand to Wales this year.

The appeal is evident to festival director Peter Florence, ‘There’s nothing sexier than having your mind turned on all day and then dancing the night away with friends in the heart of the country’.

The New York Times called it ‘The Most important festival of its kind in the English Speaking world’.

The festival line up includes: Nadine Gordimer, Bill Bryson, Tom Stoppard,

Laura Marling

Hilary Mantel, Rob Brydon, Christy Moore, Toumani Diabate, Roddy Doyle, Tim Minchin, Quentin Blake, Neil MacGregor, Philip Pullman, Laura Marling, Yottam Ottolenghi, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club and Zadie Smith.

Alasdair Roberts, Fionn Regan, The Unthanks, First Aid Kit and fabulous South Wales band Henry’s Funeral Shoe.

Possibly the hardest working band in showbiz today, Henry’s Funeral Shoe are a two piece, guitar and drums, brother combo harder than White Stripes and more real than the Ting Tings.

Anyone who cites Rory Gallagher as an influence has to have my vote.

How The Light Gets In

Being Human

HOW The Light Gets In the world’s only philosophy and music festival, is back for 2010 - bigger and better.

This year’s festival will have over a hundred events, plus a spectacular array of live performances. In Hay-on-Wye, from Friday, May 28 to Sunday, June 6, leading thinkers in every field will mix with cutting edge musicians and performers to excite the imagination and renew the spirit.

Highlights include Mortality and Immortality on Sunday, May 30 at 12pm featuring Aubrey de Grey (scientist and author of Ending Aging), Baroness Mary Warnock (philosopher and policy adviser) and Canon Giles Fraser.

Science promises to eradicate death like a disease. Is this plausible or is knowledge of our mortality essential to being human? The trio debate the impact of extending human life span on what it means to be human.

Presteigne Festival

PRESTEIGNE Festival of Music and the Arts takes place from Thursday, August 26 - Tuesday, August 31.

2010 will be an eventful year in the life of the Presteigne Festival with two brand new elements added to the programme.

The Creating Landscapes education programme will bring five new pieces of music inspired by places of natural beauty and historical importance in the Presteigne area from composers Mark Bowden, Cheryl Frances Hoad, Cecilia McDowall, Paul Patterson and Lynne Plowman.

These works will be premiered next August by the Galliard Ensemble, and new pieces of visual art, also commissioned for the project from an artist, a print maker and a photographer, will be shown as well as artwork from five local primary schools.

2010 will also see the inaugural Presteigne Festival Composer’s Competition, open to British composers between the ages of twenty and thirty – the prize is £1,000 together with a performance by three outstanding young artists as part of next year’s Festival.

Other exciting ingredients include composer- in-residence Hugh Wood, one of the UK’s most respected musical statesmen, and a survey of American composer Samuel Barber’s music in his centenary year.

Once again there is a particularly strong crop of commissions, with special prominence given to music for the voice.

There is also a new violin and piano work from Presteigne Festival favourite Joe Duddell and the Festival Orchestra will premiere a new string orchestra arrangement of the Elgar String Quartet by David Matthews.
