Erwin HS Erwin has big night in playoff game

By Clint Parker Erwin may have been in hostile

territory, but the Warriors didn’t let Kings Mountain get the best of them during their 61-40 first-round playoff victory Friday (Nov. 12). Despite the offensive output

from each team, the first quarter was played to a scoreless stalemate. Kings Mountain struck first with a field goal at the 9:30 mark in the second quarter. Shaquan Curenton, as he has

done many times this season, pro- vided a spark for Erwin, returning the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a

Great hospitality in Kings Mountain

By Clint Parker I met some great people

over the weekend covering the Kings Mountain/Erwin game. I was a stranger in strangle place, yet they made me feel at home and like a part their group. Of course, while we got

along great, they did hide their feelings with the refer- ees, the Warriors or, in the end, some of their own play- ers. Mainly, though, it was the referees. They weren’t happy with a lot of the calls, but, as always there was a little more to the story. It seems one of their an-

nouncers had made a big gaffe a few nights before during a junior varsity game. One of the referees through a f lag af- ter the whistle blew. He was about to wave it off and put the f lag back in his pocket when the announcer, not re-

alizing the microphone was still on, said, “You can throw a flag on a dead ball, moron.” The crowd erupted with ap-

plause and laughter, but f lags went as high as the press box. No one in the press box re- alized what had happen and was trying to figure it out when one of the coaches came up to the press box and said that the announcer had been ejected from the game and would have to leave the press box. Well, as it turns out, that

same referee was at Friday’s (Nov. 12) game. Anyway, by the end of the

night, at least one of the press box occupants remarked to me, “Your guys sure can score that’s for sure.” Several oth- ers wished the Warriors good luck against South Point. Their hospitality was really

outstanding. They fed me, made me feel at home and gave me a good story to tell.

as several penalties and 20-yard dash by Eatmon put the Warriors deep in Kings Mountain territory. Curen- ton punched it in several plays later to give Erwin the lead again. Te Mountaineers quickly re-

sponded with another touchdown of their own, but Erwin quarterback Garrett Brown gave the Warriors the lead for good late in the second

when he found receiver Trey Clark for a touchdown to give Erwin a 21- 17 halftime edge. During the third quarter, Erwin

put 20 points on the board, thanks in part to a Brown touchdown run and a pass to Curenton, giving Er- win a 41-24 lead at the end of the third quarter. During the fourth, five more

touchdowns were added to the scoreboard from both teams, in- cluding an interception returned for a score by Curenton and another keeper by Brown. Erwin travels to the suburbs of

touchdown, putting the Warriors ahead 7-3. On the Mountaineers’ next pos-

session, Erwin’s Max Eatmon made an interception, but a flag for rough- ing the passer gave the ball back to Kings Mountain. Tat’s just what the Mountaineers needed to spur them to another touchdown with help from junior John Robbs, who had a 25 yard run, and sophomore Jonathan Clark who gained a first down on a keeper. Zack Hooper sealed the deal with a touchdown, putting the Mountaineers back ahead 10-7 with 5:07 left in the first. It took Erwin less than a minute
