Woodfin Town solicits donations for holidays

By Matt Tate Te Town of Woodfin is gathering

donations from the community for its annual Christmas program that supplies disadvantaged Woodfin res- idents with toys, clothes, money to cover heating costs and other needs. Woodfin Town Administrator

Jason Young said through Monday (Nov. 15), the town had collected $5,486. He said while the town pre- fers cash donations so it can be used to match specific needs of each fam- ily, the town will accept unwrapped toys. Area businesses are helping out as well. On Tuesday (Nov. 23), 10

host a motorcycle and vehicle toy run on Nov. 27. the town’s Christmas festival, real- locating the $5,000 used for the festival and putting it toward the be- nevolent program. Young said donations can be

dropped off at town hall on Elk Mountain Road, and anyone in need can apply for the program at town hall as well. In other aldermen news, they vot-

ed to allow the property at the town’s ABC store to be sold to an investor with a lease back to the store. Te town currently owns the

property on Weaverville Road. Young said selling the property to an investor with a lease back will cut the debt services payments in half. Te move will also free up capital for the town.

Te aldermen also voted to free up

$25,000 from this year’s budget that was set aside for a new inclement weather sprayer. Te money would have come from the capital outlay in the Powell Bill expenditure section of the budget. State Powell Bill funds are allocated each year for various maintenance, repair and construc- tion projects for municipal streets.

Woodfin water levels improving

By Matt Tate Te water levels at Woodfin Wa-

ter District reservoir had improved by more than 4 feet since September before rains Monday (Nov. 15) and Tuesday (Nov. 16), director Joe Mar- tin said. Te district is still under manda- tory conservation restrictions because

levels are still down more than 9 feet, but with the leaves off the trees around the reservoir on Blackberry Inn Road, levels should continue to improve, he added. Replacing the 80-year-old water

lines on Riverside Drive is still pro- gressing. Martin said thus far con- struction crews have not had to tear up as much of Riverside Drive to replace the lines as anticipated and

as such, the district may be in a posi- tion to save money off the $891,000 project. In other district news, the new tank

on Baird Cove Road is still on track to be filled by the end of the year. Te Woodfin Water Board ap-

proved a 1 percent raise for all district employees. Te board will next meet at 2 pm

on Dec. 20.

face water treatment systems se- lected for this recognition out of

a total of 156 treatment systems reviewed. “Tis award is a great honor

and was achieved through the efforts of our Plant supervisor Dave Stalnaker and operators Chandler Henn and Clayton Hensley,” said director Joseph Martin. “Te district is fortunate to have such excellent treatment plant staff and I commend them for their diligence in exceed- ing state requirements for water

treatment.” Te certificate is granted by

the state to those water systems reaching a benchmark turbid- ity removal level significantly lower than state regulations for at least 95 percent of the year. Tis marks the third consecutive calendar year the Woodfin Sani- tary Water & Sewer District has received this award.
