Erwin HS Curenton sets state record

By Robin Wilson Erwin senior Shaquan Curen-

ton returned his state-record fifth interception for a touchdown dur- ing the Warriors’ 61-40 defeat of Kings Mountain the first round of the NCHSAA playoffs Friday (Nov. 12). Coach Mike Sexton was pleased the Warriors showed no ill effects

from the regular season-ending loss to Asheville. “I am extremely proud of our

team the way they bounced back after the loss to Asheville. They had to play extremely hard and well to beat a solid Kings Moun- tain football team. We had a great effort in all phases of the game. It was a great night coming out with the win,” Sexton said. Erwin now advances to play

South Point, the defending state champions. “We have a huge test in front

of us this week” he said. “We will be tested on both sides of the ball and it will take tremendous effort and execution to come out with the win.” If the Warriors win Friday

night’s (Nov. 19) game, they will play the winner of the Freedom and Crest game.
