By Matt Tate Te Lighthouse has opened on

Weaverville Road in Woodfin, stepping in for Jerry’s Bibles and Books after 18 years. Te Lighthouse store manager Matthew Roberts said visitors

to the old store will see a similar setup but they can expect a wider selection of Southern gospel mu- sic and more of an even split be- tween new books and gently used books. Roberts said the store’s South- ern gospel collection could be the

largest in Western North Caro- lina. Te Lighthouse is open from

10 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday although holiday hours may be extended. It is located at 81 Weaverville Road. For more information, call 645-2936.

Five thoughts on Christmas giving Te N.C. Center for Nonprofits

has launched a campaign to encour- age donations to state non-profits from those looking to give during the holiday. “For some nonprofits, you’ll hear

a sigh of relief just to have kept their doors open for another year,” says Trisha Lester, vice president at the N.C. Center for Nonprofits. “And, for far too many, 2011 still brings uncertainty for what’s to come. We

encourage individuals to give as generously as they can to organi- zations whose work they find most meaningful. Lester offered several thoughts

on giving:

• Eighty four percent of people would rather receive a gift that benefits someone else

• Give to nonprofits no matter the size or mission

• Volunteering is important, too. • Make giving a yearly habit

Tis special to the Tribune. December 16 - December 22, 2010 - THE TRIBUNE/LEADER 9 Tis week’s Hero of the Week will include all the municipal public

works employees and the N.C. Department of Transportation work- ers who help keep roads clear on snowy days. Te North Buncombe area has been hit with snow storms the past two weeks, and with more on the horizon, these men and women will get little time off as they continue in their efforts to make roads passable for those who need to go to work or tend to their loved ones during the storm. Teir work is sometimes done during the hours many are asleep or tucked away in their homes, so their labor may even go unnoticed by some. Tey de- serve recognition and gratitude, so that is why these men and women are this week’s Hero of the Week.
