Outdoor gift items for Christmas
By Ken Higgins December is here which means
Christmas. Gifts are always a big part of the season, and if the person on your list hunts, fishes, and shoots, then I’ve got a few suggestions that they might like. Outdoors people can use any number of items that you can buy without having to ask questions that might tip them off. We’re easy to shop for because most of us don’t know we need it until we see it anyway. One of the neatest new items is a
cap with built-in L.E.D. lights in the bill. I have used one now for six weeks deer hunting in South Carolina and it works great. It has two small bat- teries and an on/off switch so small, they’ll never know its there. Te L.E.D. lights burn forever, it
keeps both hands free and it puts out plenty of light to see when climbing in and out of a deer stand in the dark or looking for something in the bed of the truck. Te cap sells for about $20 at Dick’s Sports, Walmart and Eddie Bauer. Another item that’s hot right
now is ammunition. Rimfire ammo would be a great gift since most people own a .22 caliber gun of some type and enjoy informal target shooting. A bulk box of 500 rounds of .22 caliber long rifle shells can be had for about $25 to $30 depending on brand. Leicester Pawn and Gun Shop (285-0040) just got a truck load in last week and it is on sale. Universal cleaning kits and one-
piece cleaning rods are other items that would be welcome by any fire- arms owner. Try and find the univer- sal one-piece, plastic coated cleaning rod that sells for around $20. Te

one-piece cleaning rods are much stronger, last forever and don’t pull apart if a cleaning patch gets stuck. Having a plastic coating on the rod protects the crown and rifling of the firearm. A can of the new bore-cleaning
foam would be a good gift because a lot of shooters hate the firearm clean- ing process. Tis new bore foam is easy to use by slowly pressing the foam nozzle into the barrel, filling it with a white cleaning foam. A dark blue on patches indicates copper be- ing removed from the rifling. Sev- eral foam treatments (15-30 minutes each) may be needed before patches push through clean. Tis bore foam cleans down to
bare metal that I have verified using a bore scope which is inserted into the barrel and magnifies 10 times, allowing detailed inspection of the rifling in the barrel. No other clean- ing method cleans this well and is so easy. Just don’t store your firearm with bore foam in the barrel. It will attract water vapor over time caus- ing rust. A light coating of oil should be your final patch. Break Free and Gun Slick are two of the brand names to ask for
at about $10. One can will clean 20 or 30 guns. PF Custom Guns (252- 9487) just got in two cases of the Break Free brand that I really like. PF Custom Guns is giving a free can with any gun purchase through Christmas. Conceal carry handguns are in
demand with new models for wom- en in pink, green, purple and blue. Both Leicester Pawn & Gun and PF Custom Guns allow exchanges if you pick the wrong color. Other good gift ideas are any-
thing camouflage such as gloves, vests, shirts, rubber boots, pants, face masks, fanny packs and t-shirts. Tink about a fluorescent vest, sleep- ing bag, hand warmers, hunting vid- eos, books, knives, insect repellent, turkey call, deer grunt call, seed for deer food plots, rod and reel combi- nations, dove decoys, cooler, chain- saw, magazine subscriptions, scope, range finder, binoculars, lens clean- er, tree stands, tackle box, assorted lures, targets, and if all else fails, a gift certificate. I love opening presents. Tey’re
kind of like the unexpected surprises you encounter fishing and hunting in the great outdoors.
