DOES IT PAY TO BE UPFRONT?

instance, a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) provides an upfront tax deduction while all funds withdrawn in retirement are taxed at the IRA holder’s ordinary income tax rate. On the other hand, Roth IRAs defy this convention by foregoing the upfront tax break. All withdrawals from Roth IRAs and Roth 401(k) plans can be withdrawn tax-free, which could prove to be ad- vantageous in the event that future income tax rates rise. Tose consid- ering contributing to a Roth account must have income below $120,000 ($177,000 if married) in 2010. Tere are no income-eligibility limits to contribute to a Roth 401(k). a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA re- gardless of income as long as he or she pays the taxes owed on the entire amount. Investing money in an IRA helps

The Carpenter’s Heart is spreading out to Central America. Christmas came early for a young

ministry based out of Weaverville this year. On Nov 30, the Carpen- ter’s Heart purchased a beautiful five-acre piece of land in San Fran- cisco De Yajoa, Honduras. Eight months of prayer and more than $17,000 in fundraising paid off with the signing of a deed in a small city hall in Honduras. Tis property will be used as

a light into lives of the people of Honduras. It will serve not only as

a home to the fatherless but a place of refuge for the weak. Te land is such a lush green fer-

tile piece of soil. A place of grow- ing and of crops, filled with mango, lemon and banana trees. However the most precious crop is the people who surround it. It capped off a successful first

year for the ministry. In April 2010 the only thing the

ministry had was $125 and a bur- den to share Christ with the world. Because some members of the min- istry had built a house in worship in the San Francisco De Yajoa area, the Carpenter’s Heart knew of the

need in the area. In late April three team members took a trip to look for property. Te Carpenter’s Heart purchased one acre and held an agreement to pay off the other por- tion by Dec 30. To raise the additional funds,

members became busy with car- washes, a night at Fun Depot, sell- ing lots of cotton candy and funnel cakes, a spaghetti dinner, pancake breakfast at Fatz, softball tourna- ment and a barbecue, just to name a few. Te last two events of the year, a

5K sponsored by Trinity of Fairview and a barbecue pushed the group

over its goal. Te Carpenter’s Heart thanked all the individuals and businesses for their support. Te Carpenter’s Heart will re-

turn to Honduras in April, so more fundraising events are planned in the coming months, including an event from 5 pm to 8 pm on Jan. 14 at the Fun Depot in Asheville, and a breakfast on Feb. 5 at Fatz in Enka. For more information, call Andy
