If You Take Calcium . . .

. . . you will want to make sure you are taking it properly, for maximum absorption and efficacy.

Calcium is recommended by conventional and alternative physicians for several reasons, most often for women over 50 who are at risk for the loss of bone density that leads to osteopenia and osteoporosis. But many people taking calcium supplements don’t know that:

• Calcium carbonate needs to be taken with food

• Calcium citrate is easier on the stomach, is more readily absorbed, and doesn’t need to be taken with food

• Calcium should be taken with vitamin D for efficient absorption

• The body absorbs only about 500 milligrams of calcium at a time, so supplements must be spaced out over the day (recommended dose for postmenopausal women at risk for osteoporosis is 1200 milligrams a day)

• Too much calcium (3000 milligrams or more taken regularly over the long term) can lead to kidney stones

• People with prostate cancer, chronic kidney problems, and hyperparathyroidism should not take calcium supplements without first checking with their healthcare professional

• Calcium supplements can interfere with some medications, especially thyroid medications, so you should consult with your healthcare professional before taking them

• Calcium can leach other minerals out of your body, so you may need to take a multivitamin or trace mineral supplement as well

• Calcium is generally safe to take at recommended dosages; however, side effects can be nausea, constipation, gas and minor stomach upset (which is why it’s best to take it with food)

• Some calcium supplements may contain trace amounts of lead, especially calcium from oyster shells and such, although this risk has reduced over the years due to regulation and better manufacturing methods

There are many natural supplementation options, including many foods and drinks, such as orange juice, that contain added calcium
