animals. The unfortunate part of this equation was that the family didn’t realize a child only 10 years of age and a horse who was only 4 years of age, were jumping too big too soon. Practicing their jumps, the day before a show, Isa-

bella took a bad fall with Jesse coming out of the jump combination. She was rushed to the hospital where she spent the next 8 days in ICU with a ruptured spleen and pulmonary contusions. The first 72 hours were the most crucial for Isabella and her family. Her mom recalls Isa- bella coming out of her unconscious state only to cry and say, “don’t be mad at Jesse mom”. Isabella’s parents were ready to give the horse away and move on to another sport, but Isabella’s spirit and her love of riding could not be squashed. Following several months of recovery, she got

back in the saddle with Jesse. After this terrible accident, and Isabella wanting to keep

Jesse and continue the sport, her parents researched which trainers would be a good match for Isabella with her pas- sion and drive. With their unique needs, they visited many barns before taking the long drive to Kennedy Farms in Chino Hills, California. The trainers, Ron Kennedy, Ryan Pedigo and Marian Rocchi, had heard what happened to Isabella and agreed to give it a try and have her step into a program at their barn. Their decision was clear when they listened to Isabella talk about her love for Jesse and that she would NOT give him up. They truly understood that Jesse was Isabella’s family and they were not about to make her. There is a beautiful end to this story,

or maybe better said as a beautiful start to another one! Jesse had never par- ticipated in any horse shows, let alone an “A” show. Ron, Ryan and Isabella decided to show him this year in Del Mar/ ShowPark. A long way from the frightened, skitter, feisty little critter Isabella had rescued, Jesse was Reserve Champion in the Adult/Children Am- ateurs. They have come a long way togeth-

er and Isabella wants Jesse to be the “poster child” for Rescued Horses. She wants the world to see that horses deserve a second chance and that we all need to work together to end Horse Slaughter. Will Jesse continue to be a show

horse? Not sure what his future holds, but he will continue to be Isabella’s best friend and family member…..for- ever.
