So let us join hands. Let us speak out for the voiceless and the poor. Let us assert our right, as citizens of free democracies, to take back into our hands the produc- tion of food. Let us, together, sow seeds for a better harvest ~ a harvest for hope.

Enjoy the great outdoors!
Indian summer usually follows the first cold spell of the season. The weather warms up and we get to enjoy some more beautiful autumn days outside ~ to walk or hike, bike ride, play games and work in the yard or garden.
The best part about the changing seasons is the food! I love how nature provides a welcoming new variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds for preparing wholesome meals and tasty desserts. Some of my personal favorites are green apples and butternut squash. A family favorite autumn dessert is Chef Tom’s Organic Apple Crumb Cake. The recipe is included in this issue.

This issue also spotlights Jane Goodall and Alice Waters, two very special people who are dedicated to working with young people, community groups,
schools...to improve the quality of our food, the conservation of animals and the health of the planet. As the group leader of one of our local Roots & Shoots groups, I had the honor to meet Jane Goodall when she visited Asheville. She is a true inspiration for many good projects, some of which we’ve highlighted for you. Enjoy this issue and the goodness of the season ~ through food, nature and play.
