Meet Jen Becker New York Power Authority Chief Sustainability Manager


was interested in all things social and environmental, thanks to her parents’ philosophy of “giving back to the community.” At graduate school in Brooklyn, she brought her civic sensibility with her and decided to pursue a Masters of Urban Planning degree with a focus on environmental and economic issues. By the time she graduated in 2001,

organizations were starting to look at their environmental impact and realizing the advantages of minimizing those impacts from both an operational and a public relations standpoint. Thus, the field of Sustainability was born. “Government has really embraced the idea of leading by example, but they are also motivated to help save state resources,” says Becker. “Most government agencies now have a point person to help coordinate environmental considerations into all aspects of their operations.”

and to guide NYPA’s work in pursuing sustainability in all its operations. A year earlier, NYPA had earned a LEED Gold designation for its White Plains Office under the Green Building Council’s recognition standards; that effort is now spreading to other NYPA work sites. In January 2010, NYPA published its first Sustainability Action Plan with 41 specific action items to be completed in three years.


“The employee buy-in toward this plan has been great,” says Becker. “Being able to get 1600 NYPA employees at 17 different locations all working toward a common purpose illustrates how Sustainability—the idea of preserving our planet for future generations—resonates for people of all classes and cultures.” The New York Power Authority is the
