If there is one area of a person’s body that is the most aesthetically appealing, attracts the

most attention, and is the most desired to keep physically conditioned, most people would say it is the abdominal muscles (core). Having wash board abs are not only great to look at (and be complimented on), they are absolutely essential in the overall health of your entire body. The midsection also tell a lot about a person and the life they are leading ( physical, mental, emotional, stress). Here are some key areas to look over if you are diligently working on your abdominal muscles with little return. Stress-Our stress response is a complex biochemical super achievement that is essential to

our everyday well-being. The problem is: we over stimulate it on an ongoing or exaggerated basis (secreting stress hormones continually instead of conservatively). We are no longer or seldom running for our lives or preparing to fight (fight or flight response); today our society is running from psychological stress, and tons of it. Dr. Robert Sapolsky (acclaimed expert on the stress response and professor of neurobiology, Stanford University) articulates it perfectly: “Atomically humans and animals share similar physiological substructures of the stress re- sponse, so why do you not see lions walking around with a huge inner-tube for a waistline?” The answer is simple in its complexity: Although animals are under constant strain to survive day in and day out ( kill for food and not be killed for food), they live in momentary stresses that come and go which allows their bodies to take the appropriate action needed (fight or flight, kill or be killed) then recover and continue on. Humans on the other hand live in sustained stresses (mental, emotional stress) that create an exaggerated stress response leading to a build-up of stress hormones that end up damaging the bodie’s physiology. For example: In small doses, Glucocorticoids sculpt our immune system to make us more resilient to infections, in sustained doses they permanently disrupt the insulin response enabling the assimilation and directing or nutrients; this equals a nice spare tire around your waist. So do all forms of stress create the same biochemical response? YES. Stress from poor nutrition or not eating properly causes the same response as being physically stressed (working out too hard or not enough), mentally stressed (fighting with your loved one or coworkers), emotionally stressed ( worrying about if you’re good enough, doing enough or pretty enough). What it comes down to is we are essentially self sabotaging; if you can manage your mental warfare, your physical possibilities are endless.
