THINGS THAT IDINA LOVES ABOUT HER HUSBAND, TAYE DIGGS…
being an entertainer and…because I used to do wed- dings and bar mitzvahs I have a real allergy to shtick. So, when I’m on stage and I’m telling a story, I want people to feel like it’s the first time they’re hearing it. So, it doesn’t seem like it’s something I do all the time and it’s authen- tic. Sometimes, it’s fun for me to go on tangents and hopefully for the audience. I’m constantly playing with that by finding new ways to say the same thing. That’s just the nature of the beast. That’s why I love
theatre and I don’t get sick of it. For me, there is always something new to find. Every audience is different and you feel different on stage every night.
THINGS THAT ANNOY IDINA ABOUT HER HUSBAND…
“That he is so goddamn gorgeous. He’s go- ing to look young forever and I’m going to get old and wrinkly.”
“That he can eat a pint of Hagen-Daaz be- fore he goes to bed every night of the week and not gain any weight!”
Rage: I recently saw your public service announcement with Elton John, Ricky Martin and Wanda Sykes among others for the “Give a Damn” campaign against LGBT hate crimes. How did that come about? IM: I put myself out there as an advocate. I met Cyndi Lauper a few times and her people came to me and asked me. It was a no brainer actually; it’s just also perfect timing with all the stuff that has been going on. It’s inter- esting how that happens. She’s just doing it because of the love in her heart and then it turns out, it’s very much needed right now.
Rage: Sure…You just had a recurring part on GLEE last season. How would you describe the energy of being a part of that show? IM: Oh wow. I came at it from an interesting perspec-
tive because I had just had my baby. So, it was here and there on this crazy rollercoaster ride and groundbreak- ing show and all this excitement. But, I didn’t feed off of it maybe as much as I would have if I just hadn’t given birth (laughter). It was very much about balancing the job and get back to the baby. I was really appreciative of being asked to be on that show. When you’re pregnant and fat, you think you’re never going to work again. It was more from that perspective. I was enjoying working there and then getting home and being a mom.
Rage: Yeah. Were you aware of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revision- ing of The Wizard of Oz in London? IM: I’ve heard of it. What are they doing?
Rage: It’s the same story as the film with the same musical numbers but he and Tim Rice created three new songs. Hey, do they need a witch? You’re pretty good at it. IM: Uhhh…I’m done with the green for a little while
(laughter).
