Wanda Sue Dockery Ewing Asheville - Wanda Sue Dockery
Ewing of 51 Rockhill Circle passed away Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Asheville Specialty Hospital. She was a native of Madison County and a daughter of the late Charlie James and Nettie Carson Dock- ery. She was also preceded in death by her husband Dan Ewing and two sisters. Surviving are her son, Ray-
mond Carswell (Yokum) of Korea; grandchildren, Nathan Carswell and Sara Carswell; special niece, Deborah Sprouse of Asheville; sisters, Hazel Wilde of Mars Hill and Jean Oliver of Asheville; brothers, Willard Dockery of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Paul Ev- ans of Victoria, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held at
2 pm on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 in Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. The Rev. Larry Wilson officiated. Burial followed in Bowman-Rec- tor Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 pm – 2 pm prior to the service. Online condolences may be e-

Troy Todd Smith Weaverville – Troy Todd Smith,
age 45, of 11 Wildwood Park Knoll, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010. Troy was
born Jan. 16, 1965, in Tam- pa, Fla., and was a resident of Buncombe County since 1974. He was a 1983 gradu- ate of North B u n c omb e
High School. Troy was the owner and operator of Smith Glass since 1996. Even though he was not a member, he always claimed that Cedar Hill Baptist Church was
his church and would even invite people to come. Troy loved to fish and hunt. He also enjoyed playing checkers with Brooke. He was a homebody and enjoyed his family being there. He was a son of Bren- da Chittenden Smith of Easley, S.C., and the late Eugene “Gene” Smith. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Allen Smith. Surviving in addition to his moth-
er are his wife of 25 years, Burn- detta Hardesty Smith; daughter, Brooke Smith of the home; sister, Karen Smith of Easley, SC; and brother, David Smith of Greenville, SC. His funeral service was held at 2
pm on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, in the Cedar Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roy McPeters officiating and the Rev. Joe Honeycutt serv- ing as honorary minister. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family received friends from
4 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, where the body remained un- til placed in the church one hour prior to the service. At other times, the family was at

Young, age 89, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010.
Mrs. Young
was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Madison County. She g r a d u a t e d from Beech Glen School in 1938 and a t t e n d e d Asheville Nor-
mal and Teachers College from 1938 to 1939. Mrs. Young thrived in the retailing trade, working as a clerk in Mars Hill Pharmacy; as

erville Music Club during his youth. He is a former recipient of the club’s music scholarship. He graduated from Asbury College with a degree in music and

business partner with her hus- band in gift shop businesses in West Virginia and Pennsylvania from 1946 to 1958; as a sales clerk for Bon Marche, Asheville; a ca- shier for Shope’s Grocery, Weav- erville; sales clerk and layaway manager for JC Penney, Asheville, setting up their first credit card system; sales clerk for Top’s for Shoes, Asheville; owner and op- erator of Young’s Dry Cleaners in Weaverville during the mid 1960s; operator of Pin Money Shop for Tops for Shoes; and she worked for Rose’s in Weaverville during her retirement. Mrs. Young joined First Baptist Church in Weaverville on April 13, 1958, and remained a member until her death. She was athletic and played basketball and baseball skillfully and enthu- siastically. One lifelong hobby of hers was arts and crafts. She was particularly good at painting flow- ers. She liked to play the piano boogie-woogie style. Another avid interest of hers in the 1970s was ballroom dancing; she danced competitively and won many tro- phies throughout the Southeast. She was preceded in death by
her father, Fred J. Briggs; mother, Ida Briggs; her husband of 34 years, William Kenneth Young; brother, Roy E. Briggs; and son, William Jerry Young. Surviving are her son, Clarence
Ervin Young; grandson, Jonathan Ervin Young; daughter-in-law, Ruth E. Young of Fletcher; and brother, William Donald Briggs of Indian Trail. Her graveside service was at 3
pm on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, with Rev. Jim McCoy
officiating. A memorial service celebrating
her life will be presented at 4:30 pm on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. In lieu of flowers, donations may
be made to a local hospice in her memory.

Memorial ride for Scot Parker
A memorial motorcycle ride will
be held Saturday (Sept. 18) starting at Piney Mountain Baptist Church in Weaverville for Scot Parker, who recently passed away. Registration begins at 10 am, and
the ride lasts from 11 am to 2 pm. Lunch will be served at 2 pm. A donation to ride and eat will be
$20. Lunch plates for adult non-rid- ers will be $5 and $3 for children. All monies collected from this
event will be given to Scot’s wife and Blue Ridge Funeral Services to assist with funeral arrangements. To make a donation or for addi-

Genealogical Society meeting Te Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society is pleased to announce
their annual fall workshop “Family History in Your Pajamas: Genealogy on the Internet” will take place from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday (Sept. 18).
Te workshop will be held on the campus of Asheville-Buncombe Tech-
nical Community College in the Simpson Lecture Hall in Asheville on Victoria Road. Whether a beginning or advanced researcher (or anywhere in between),
anyone interested in family history research will benefit from this work- shop. Leading edge technology and internet research techniques will be discussed in detail.
