NBHS BlackHawks pull together for key win

By Matt Tate North Buncombe players showed

Friday (Sept. 10) they have not for- gotten the feeling. During and after the Black-

Hawks’ 14-8 win against Brevard, NBHS Head Football Coach Carey Metts said the team’s increased en- thusiasm was evident. After Colby Fox snared a last-

second heave from Brevard quarter- back Tre Pope as the horn sounded, the celebration was on for the first time in more than a year. “Te spirits were high,” Metts

said of Friday’s much-needed vic- tory against the Blue Devils. “We were ready for a win.” It was Aug. 28, 2009, when the

BlackHawks last walked off the field with a victory. Not counting last year’s forfeit from McDow- ell, North Buncombe had lost 12 straight games. Coupled with off-field distrac-

tions about inappropriate behavior from the coach that have recently hung over the team, the Black- Hawks could not have picked a bet- ter time to turn in their most com- plete performance of the season. “Te kids played with a lot of heart,” Metts said. “It was the

most heart I’ve seen these kids play with.” North Buncombe turned in a

dominating defensive performance, highlighted by Corey Wilson’s fumble recovery and touchdown that gave the BlackHawks a 14-2 cushion with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Te defense shut out Brevard until giving up a touchdown late in the fourth quar- ter.

Te BlackHawks got on the board

in the first half when quarterback Christian Jewkes found Ben Shel- ton in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown. Offensively, Metts said the team had other bright moments, but was again beset with penalties. “We’d have a good run and then

it would get called back,” the coach said. Te BlackHawks amassed 110 yards in penalties. Still, it gives North Buncombe

(1-3) a working foundation to build from, and Metts believes if they continue to pull together, it could be the start of a new season for the embattled BlackHawks. North Buncombe takes to the

at Enka. “I think the kids are going to

pull together. It could really change things around for us,” Metts said.
