“Don’t P in the Lake!” campaign. This catchy phrase is part of a program recently adopted by the Town of Meredith and be- ing considered by Laconia and numerous commu- nities around Lake Win- nipesaukee. The goals of the program are to raise public awareness regard- ing the harmful impact of “P” (phosphorus and pesticides) on the health of the lake and individuals to reduce the amount of “P” they contribute to local waterbodies. Phosphorus is a nutrient, when present in excessive amounts in a waterbody, can feed dan- gerous algae blooms and accelerate the growth of unwanted nuisance plants like variable milfoil. One

simple way to reduce the amount of phosphorus you contribute to local water- ways is to not use fertilizer on your lawn—unless your lawn is new, most likely it doesn’t need the addi- tional nutrients anyway. If you must fertilize, use phosphate-free fertilizer (the middle number on the three digit number combi- nation on the bag should be “0”) and don’t use any fertilizer (except limestone) within 25 feet of a water- body. Pesticides (which include insecticides, her- bicides, rodenticides, and fungicides) used on the landscape to prevent, de- stroy or repel pests, are typically applied incorrect- ly and excessively, caus- ing them to contaminate groundwater and surface waters.
