MARINES from 22

ghanistan where he was awarded the “Bronze Star Medal” for meritorious duty while stationed at the US Embassy in Kabul. His military experience has been intertwined with the years in politics including service in the Persian Gulf War in 1990-91, as well as during his Senate ten- ure when he was called to duty and served a tour in Iraq in 2004. Born in Mel- rose, Massachusetts, he came to New Hampshire early in his youth and was raised in Wakefield, where he still resides with his family. The “Gather ing” is

unique to veterans of the Marine Corps who live in New Hampshire. Founded in 1998 by Retired Colo- nel, Norm Noel, from Mer- edith, it started out as a get-together by a few local former Marines residing in the Lakes Region for dinner to celebrate the Corp’s birthday. It grew through the years to now be recognized as one of the most attended Marine Corps birthday celebra- tions in the state. This year’s event is expected to be well attended again, according to Robert Pat- enaude, the Comman- dant of the Lakes Region Detachment #506 of the Marine Corps League. The Detachment was chartered in 1986 and currently has members who served in the Marine Corps, and Na- val Corpsman attached to Marine Corps units, from WWII to the present time. It ‘s members provide sup- port to a number of local charities, the New Hamp- shire Veterans Home in Tilton, families of Marines who are experiencing dis- tress and scholarships for children of those who have served in the Corps. The Detachment also provides honor guards in parades and at funerals for deceased Marines and their spouses, as well as firing details and buglers

during gravesite intern- ment ceremonies. This past summer the Detach- ment was honored by be- ing selected to provide an honor guard during open- ing ceremonies for a Red Sox game at Fenway Park in Boston. As in past year’s “Gath-

ering” celebrations, the evening agenda will com- mence at 6:00 PM for reg- istration, with ceremonies starting at 6:30 PM fol- lowed by a Western style buffet. After dinner music and dancing will be of- fered. Wearing of uniforms by attending veterans of

the respective branches of the military, and especial- ly those who have served in the Marine Corps, is al- ways encouraged or semi- formal civilian attire. All those wishing to attend this year’s celebration are asked to purchase tickets early by sending a check for $45.00 per person payable to the Lakes Re- gion Detachment, Marine Corps League c/o Bob Patenaude, Commandant, at P.O. Box 628, Wolfe- boro Falls, New Hamp- shire 03896, or call him at 603-253-7970 for further information.
