Communications, Allstate Insurance Company, IBM, Intel, Pitney Bowes, Boeing, Eli Lilly and Company, University of California, San Jose University, Sandia National Laboratories, The University of Arizona, the National Science Foundation, and Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Entergy took out a one-page ad congratulating Oscar Limpias and P.J. Martinez on their outstanding performance, leadership and vision within the energy organization. In the UPS ad, Jovita Carranza, president of UPS Americas, stood tall as a shining example for others.

In 2003, HE&IT magazine’s Power Hitters survey was especially significant because it followed the release of census data confirming that Hispanics are the largest mi- nority in the U.S. The power hitters had moved aside the barriers that traditionally kept Hispanics underrepresented in technology and science and in senior executive ranks. They came from diverse organizations: Lawrence Livermore National Labora- tory, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Hewlett-Packard, Cisco Systems, CSC, and PepsiCo to name a few.

In the same HE&IT recognition issue, the 2003 Corporativo Visionario also broad- ened the roll-call of the places of opportunity that opened their doors to skill, tal- ent, and hard work with more names of people who create and expand opportuni- ties for others and add to the bottom line.

Some of the 2003 Most Important Hispanics in Technology and Business included the following people and companies: Adalio T. Sanchez, then general manager, e- Server pSeries, IBM Systems Group; Miriam Vializ-Briggs, VP, IBM Grid Computing Business Unit; Arturo A. Rosales, director, Boeing Satellite Systems, Inc.; Francisco Figueroa, VP and CFO, Sandia National Laboratories; Miguel L. Escobar, VP, Allstate Insurance Company; Michelle Goins, VP and group information officer, Hewlett- Packard; Hector J. Motroni, SVP and chief staff officer, Xerox; Ralph G. Tourino, VP, space support systems, Lockheed Martin Corporation; Oscar Velasco, VP, Siemens Medical Systems; Carlos Dominguez, VP, Cisco Systems; Jaime Borras, CVP, Motor- ola; Pedro Pizzaro, VP, Southern California Edison; Grace D. Lieblein, president and managing director of GM de Mexico; Ralph de la Vega, then president of BellSouth America, now president and CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets; Hugo. B. Poza, head of Raytheon’s homeland security business sector; Dan E. Arvizu, SVP and chief technology officer, CH2MHill; Wilbert Berrios, CIO, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Nils J. Diaz, former chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; Carlos Dominguez, VP, Cisco Systems; and Antonio R. Flores, president and CEO, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

HACU ran a one-page muchas felicidades ad when Dr. Flores was selected again in 2004. The more than 300 colleges and universities that make up HACU were proud of the contribution he has made to the development of their institutions, the stu- dents they serve, and of the communities and businesses served in turn by Hispanic students.

In the same issue, CH2MHill applauded Dan Arvizu and Lilliana Maldonado, while employees of Georgia-Pacific saluted Mario Concha for his leadership in the success of the company. MCI congratulated two employees who had been selected to join HE&IT’s elite group who were shaking up America through progressive leader- ship, achievements in advancing access to technology, furthering technical literacy within the Hispanic community, and engaging technology with global market economy.

The careers of these luminaries and outstanding executives selected from hundreds of submissions for HE&IT’s annual list of “Most Important Hispanics in Technology, Government and Business” shows that nothing has stopped the generations of technology leaders featured in the pages of HE&IT since 1984. They continue to help the nation’s top corporations and agencies remain competitive and push to the top of America’s industry in 2010 and beyond.
