New woodland scheme launches FCW to co-fund new skills development programme

By Pete Hayman Young people in mid-Wales are to be given the opportunity to develop countryside and land management skills as part of a project co-funded by Forestry Commission Wales (FCW). The Branching Out/Egin

initiative is to be delivered by Tir Coed, a charity set up in 1999 by a group of countryside groups to advocate the benefits of woodland areas in Wales. Disadvantaged young people

between the ages of 16 and 25 years old will have the chance to work at local nature reserves and community woodlands.

Taking first thinings, fencing,

ditching and the maintenance of footpaths are among skills that can be learned, as well as installing bridges, boardwalks and other visitor facilities. FCW's Woodlands for People policy advisor, Roz Owen, said:

"Wales' woodlands offer a stimulating outdoor learning environment for people to develop practical new skills." The programme is expected

to benefit 120 people between 2010 and 2013, while Tir Coed is looking to expand the initiative to the Heads of the Valleys Strategic Regeneration Area in the coming months.

ith a decade of sporting events fast approaching, and the UK being the host of so many

fantastic events, there is no time like the present to celebrate the nation's achievements in the leisure industry. Springboard does this by organising

a night dedicated to rewarding talent in the leisure, hospitality and tourism sector – the Springboard Awards for Excellence, now in its eighth year. This year's awards are due to take

place in November and will celebrate the inspiring people, organisations and initiatives that have been working hard to raise the profile of the industry as an employer that is helping to attract and retain the best talent. Speaking about the success of the Springboard Awards for

SAM COULSTOCK is customer relation- ship director at Springboard UK

Excellence 2009, Anne Pierce, chief executive of The Springboard Charity and Springboard UK, said: "The awards truly celebrate achievement in the industry. The outstanding people in our businesses, the teams that drive our strategies forward, the individuals who delight customers daily, the companies that champion innovation and progression – all make the hospitality, leisure, and tourism industry thrive. "The number and quality of award entries this year has been

incredible and all of our winners and short-listed candidates should be hugely proud of their achievements." To ensure that this year's awards outshine last year's, we are

looking for even more support. If you believe you have performed exceptionally well and have tangible results that will impress the judges, why not apply for the 2010 awards? The benefits from these awards are exceptional and will certainly provide a confidence boost. Red Carnation Hotels won the Best Employer Award for

Hospitality and Leisure in 2009. Liz McGivern, the company's director of human resources and training, said: "We are so proud of our Springboard Award for Excellence. We display the award and mention it on our collateral and website and I have to say that people do ask what we won the award for. "Anything that helps you attract the best people to your

organisation has to be a bonus and I know that when I explain what we won the award for, people have been interested and impressed. It has helped us to showcase our achievements and helped put us on the map!" For further information about the awards, log on to the Springboard website at www.events.springboarduk.net/awards
