Yoga Teacher Training for PTSD

uzanne Mannaforte has been volun- teering to teach yoga classes at the Newington Veterans Hospital for about two years. In working with the veter- ans, she learned to modify her classes to account for physical limitations and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) needs. Recently, she teamed up with Daniel Libby, a Postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, who was also working with veterans with PTSD. Together they put together a training program for Yoga Teachers to learn the special needs of working with PTSD. The training will be at Newington Yoga Center on October 1-3. As a yoga instructor and owner of Newington Yoga Center, Mannaforte had years

S

of experience teaching yoga classes. But she quickly learned that people with trauma need the classes to be conducted differently than a traditional class. “Veterans with PTSD need to be able to see the door at all times so they feel safe, and they need to know and see where I am in the room at all times. In addition, touching can feel like a violation, so I had to be very mindful of that,” Mannaforte explains. The practice of yoga teaches us to turn inward, to pay attention, and to just notice.

We find balance in the mind and the body with this practice. We also cultivate a feeling of overall wellbeing. The turning inward process and the connection of mind-body are the reason millions of people are turning to yoga in these uncertain times. “That’s one of the reasons it works so well with people who suffer with PTSD. It

brings them back into their body. It gives them the opportunity to step back in slowly. The resting practices seem to be the perfect answer for this constant state of hyper- arousal,” says Mannaforte.
