As always, I am delighted that you picked up a copy of the September issue of Natural Awakenings Hartford. This one has a very special meaning to me because it is my SECOND ANNIVERSARY ISSUE! I’m shouting it out, because it is quite a milestone for me. Wow! Two years and so much more to come! Exciting times lay ahead, please stay tuned! The focus this month is Creative Expression. I have read that in order to create, you must let go of the fear of making mis- takes and just ‘go for it.’ I believe I’m there. Endless thanks to our advertisers and supporters that make this ride possible every month.

The other day I pondered a fun question: If I could equate my journey as an entrepreneur/ publisher to an amusement park, what attraction would it be? Well, certainly there have been many visits to the concession area. Yes, I have cashed in my adult beverage tickets and have endured many late nights with pizza (Yes, I’m an anchovy fan!), snacks, and dark chocolate. What’s that saying? ”Wine a little, you’ll feel better?” Unfortunately, these little habits have led me down the path to the Fun House, with those wavy mirrors that make you look a little bigger in the hips. One must maintain a sense of humor in this business. Funny, I didn’t think I had one of those mirrors in my house, but apparently the mirror gremlins installed one when I wasn’t paying attention! Still it hasn’t kept me from donning the bathing suit and hitting the pool, my personal water park. In the recent heat I have found relief. But floating in the cool water doesn’t always come close to describing my life these days.

Of course we can consider Ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds, those gentler, cyclical rides that are fun any day. But let’s face it, those painted horsies and carnival music can be a little frightening! What about The Swinger, Round-up, or those giant pirate ships that come close to but never quite flip over? Well, I can hear the screams and feel my stomach clench and head spin when I think about those rides. No, to me those rides are too painful. Then there are the games of chance. Yes, certainly at times I’ve rolled for prizes and every so often I’ve come up big. (Have I thanked my sponsors lately?) The answer has got to be the most fun, thrilling, fast, unpredictable, exhilarating, sometimes scary, rock-dodging, fist clench- ing, laugh inducing Roller Coaster of all time! One that is really fast, faster than my mom sending a check when I needed money to pay the printer. (Thanks Mom & Dad!) One that has twists and blind turns that always surprise; one that goes forward and backward. One that zigs when you thought it would zag, with a painstakingly slow build-up, “click-click- click-click-clicking” to the very top of the ride. Oh, the coaching and support it took to get me on and go to the top and actually open my eyes and look around! (Thanks Larry, Anna, John, & Sharon!) This is a ride that lifts you to a place where you’ve never reached before in your life. Then ZOOM! Like a lightning bolt takes you down the hill again, with a few white-knuckle turns and back-to-back rises before banking left, banking right, loop-de-loop, corkscrew, and then WHOOMP! The bottom falls out into a free fall. You scream until you realize you’re okay, but you’re seriously squishing the friend that got into that front car with you. (Thanks Pat!) With fingers tightly holding the safety bar, I can only hope for the day I’ll be brave enough to let go take a hands-free ride like a veteran. There are times when you want to ask the attendant to stop the ride so you can get off. There are days you just can’t get on at all, and your friend understands and takes you out sailing instead (Thanks Tom!) There are times when you want to cry, and you do. But there’s a top-notch team that gets you through the rough spots every time. (Thanks Julee, Julie, Beth, Kathy, Charlie, TN Press and NA Family!) The best part of all is when the ride slows down and, and the blood comes back to your head, and you feel the earth under your feet again, and you flash your best smile at your buddies who choose the same ride every day, and you laugh really hard and hug and say “THAT WAS SO COOL! LET’S GO AGAIN!” (Thanks Mary! Thanks Stephanie!) And the people waiting in the line watch you pass by as you head for the concession stand and they ask, “Was it worth it?” Your smile says it all, “Oh, Yeah!”
