Interns

This year, NYTW offered 23 college students and/or recent graduates and 2 high school students’ internships with our Artistic, Literary, Casting, Production Management, Technical Direction, Development, Marketing, Education and General Management departments. Internships last three to four months, offer a $50 weekly stipend, unlimited monthly MetroCards and sometimes result in school credit. Besides participating in daily staff activities and meetings, the cohort of NYTW interns gathered every other week to discuss their work, share ideas and speak with invited guests from the theatre community over lunch. Many of our Interns have gone on to become full-time members of NYTW’s staff, or work at other notable New York theatre organizations.

Mind The Gap

After a successful pilot program in spring 2009, NYTW continued to facilitate Mind The Gap, a free intergenerational writing workshop. Led by two professional playwrights affiliated with NYTW, Mind the Gap provided seven elders (age 60+) and seven high school students with the opportunity to hone their dramatic writing skills, be involved with the arts and interact with and learn from class- mates with different life experiences. During the workshop, participants from each age group were paired together to share their personal stories. The program culminated in a presentation of short scenes, inspired by their partner’s stories, read by professional actors for an audience of family, friends and NYTW staff.

NYTW’s Education Initiatives for young people center on Learning Workshop, a multidisciplinary theatre education program that supports middle and high school students’ creative development by critically engaging them in the artistic process surrounding our productions. During the 2009 - 2010 Season, NYTW partnered with three New York City public schools: the Lower Manhattan Arts Academy (LoMA) and in Brooklyn, the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology (HSTAT) and the Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA). Partner Schools participated in Student Matinees of our productions followed by talkbacks; in-class and afterschool workshops; Mentoring Workshops and the internship program.

“Mentoring workshops at NYTW were like taking apart that amazing toy you got for Christmas, because you got to figure out how it does what it does. I think I learned the most from the production, casting and script departments…some unbelievable creations come out of this place and it takes a whole team to make it happen.”
