2009 - 2010 Season Aftermath

By Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, Directed by Jessica Blank September 1 - October 18, 2009

From the creators of The Exonerated, Aftermath captured the harrowing and inspiring details of the real people behind the phrase “collateral damage”- the civilian victims of the war in Iraq. Based on interview transcripts with close to thirty-five Iraqi refugees living in Amman, Jordan, the production garnered critical acclaim and was extended by two weeks. Over the course of two years, NYTW fostered the play’s development by securing funding from the Ford Foundation and the MAP Fund for the playwrights’ trip to Jordan and the production, shepherding the play from conception to production.

I Got Sick Then I Got Better

By Jenny Allen, Directed by James Lapine and Darren Katz September 14 - November 13, 2009

In our 4th Street Theatre, NYTW introduced audiences to I Got Sick Then I Got Better, by writer and performer Jenny Allen (The New Yorker, The New York Times). A witty, bittersweet and heartfelt monologue, I Got Sick Then I Got Better recounts Ms. Allen’s journey of being diagnosed with and then treated for ovarian cancer. Her wrenching comic riff on what it means to fall down the medical rabbit hole succeeded in portraying the personal and family hurdles a life- threatening illness produces. The show was developed during a NYTW Summer Residency at Dartmouth College.
