Hours of Free Space for Artists
In addition to a busy production schedule in 2009 - 2010, NYTW continued to support extensive Artist Development Activities, offering artists at all stages of their careers the opportunity to collaborate with NYTW staff and participate in a wide range of creative learning experiences. When the year concluded, we served 1,625 artists. Here’s how:
NYTW’s Usual Suspects, an expansive community of 475 theatre artists, comprised of actors, playwrights, dramaturgs, designers and directors, enjoyed numerous benefits this year, including: tickets to all of NYTW’s mainstage productions, opportunity to produce in the Suspects’ Studio, access to their own membership website and free rehearsal space for developmental work in our 3rd Floor Studio or 70-seat theatre.
Throughout the past year, our Companies-in-Residence Elevator Repair Service and Noor Theatre, received free office supplies, space for meetings, rehearsals and workshops, and guidance and mentorship from the NYTW staff.
NYTW’s two play reading series--Mondays @ 3 and Thursday evening Suspects’ Studio--gave 61 projects the space, time and feedback to further their process.
The Dartmouth Residency ran from August 1- August 23, 2009, and gathered 48 Fellows, Usual Suspects, guest artists and students for workshops, mentoring and project development. Six new plays were developed during this residency, including Food and Fadwa by Lameece Issaq, Plowing the Sea by Jorge Ignacio Cortinas, Feast of Fools by Alex Lewin and The Illiad adapted by Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson.

Najla Saïd in Palestine
As part of our Jonathan Larson Lab program, NYTW granted the highly valuable commodity of free rehearsal and performance space as well as the support of NYTW’s artistic staff to small theatre companies and groups of theatre artists. In the fall of 2009, NYTW gave lab time to a production of the musical, Piece of My Heart, written by Bert and Cassandra Berns and directed by Leigh Silverman. In spring 2010, Lab Participants included: Pataphysics Penyeach: Summa Dramatica & Porco Morto written and directed by Mabou Mines’ artistic leader Lee Breuer, Twilight Theatre Company’s Palestine by Najla Saïd, and Karen Malpede’s Prophecy. In total, 63 artists participated in this program.
The Emerging and Resident Artists of Color Fellowship Program continued to allow up-and-coming artists the chance to develop their crafts while utilizing the resources of an established nonprofit producing company. This season, NYTW awarded four Emerging Fellowships to Ismail Khalidi (Playwright), Harrison Rivers (Playwright), Deena Selenow (Director) and Suzi Takahashi (Director) along with one Resident Fellowship to Rafael Gallegos (Director) in Artistic Leadership.
