Grant-funded EMS Training

Includes Interactive Scenarios On Human Patient Simulators

by Gary Dunn

The economic downturn has pinched emergency medicine training budgets, which means departments have to seek new avenues and creative approaches to fund critical training. One viable option available to any EMS provider is the 16- hour, grant-funded course, “Medical Man- agement of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) Events” (PER211), offered by the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) through a training grant from the Department of Homeland Security. The course has recently been updated and revised to a two-day course with all the same great components of the earlier 24-hour course, but in a shorter version to better meet your training needs and time constraints – all at no charge to your program.

A unique feature of PER 211 is that the didactic portion of the class is followed with interactive, hands-on simulations us- ing state-of-the-art Human Patient Simu- lators (HPS). The class is divided into groups who navigate through a series of realistic, “hands on” scenarios. The sce- narios are a learning environment that al- lows students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom, thereby enhancing criti- cal thinking skills.

This is definitely not a “death by Pow- erPoint” type of class, where you sit for days and are spoon-fed information. Pre- sentation of course material is primarily facilitated discussion supported by Pow- erPoint presentations. We want you to come in the door with questions, but we want you to leave with a more focused list of questions for your response commu- nity. You should walk out of the class thinking, “We need to look at…, and need to consider …” This will help you make a To-Do list for your response area. We also expect to learn from you. We want to know what types of events, drills and/or training you have been involved with. Tell us what went well, what things you would choose to “do over.” These types of lessons learned are shared across our nation by our staff to your fellow re- sponders.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAY

One physician who attended the course commented that in her 10+ years as a mil- itary physician, she had never received this amount or this level of CBRNE train- ing. Numerous students have said to me, “This is the best, most applicable course I have ever attended.” My favorite com-
