Helena HEADLINES Youngsters meet Alan Shearer

Two youngsters from Sutton Heath recently netted a meeting with football legend Alan Shearer.

Wade Weaver and Josh Leigh had their photograph taken with the former England and Newcastle footballer, when they accompanied Tanya Roberts, Helena’s Community Engagement Officer, to the opening of the new £2 million ‘Fives’ football facility in St Helens.

The former Newcastle number nine was there to take a look around the facilities and show visitors a glimpse of his footballing skills. Fives has nine indoor, third-generation five-a-side football pitches and one 65-metre by 25-metre pitch, which is almost full-size.

It is hoped that Helena and St Helens Council will work together to set up football tournaments at the new venue.

GROWING HEALTHY

Youngsters from Thatto Heath Primary School have been learning all about planting, recycling and how to grow their own fruit and vegetables at a Helena Homes’ Grow Healthy event.

Teaming up with re:new and Groundwork Trust, Helena Homes provided the green-fingered youngsters with five different workshops on the day. The children enjoyed taking part in a grow your own sunflower competition, wormery making, and creating flowers for plant pots out of recycled materials. They were also given a talk about the reasons why we compost, and had the opportunity to plant their own peas.

CONGRATULATIONS...

A former participant in Helena’s Evolution programme is celebrating after getting a full-time job with a gardening company, thanks to the support from Helena.

Danny Harden, 20, took part in the Evolution scheme – which aims to help young people get onto a positive future path – after he was nominated by his local neighbourhood officer.

Following completion of Evolution, Danny secured a two-week voluntary work placement with Helena’s Estate Caretakers, and then went on to a 10-week volunteer placement with the Green Space team.

Now Danny has taken up a full-time role with with Bold Heath Gardening Services.

Good Luck to Danny with his new job! Ramp Riders

School is out for summer. The sun is shining, and it’s the perfect time to hit the ramps. If this sounds like your kind of thing, it is worth reading on to see what Helena Homes have in store for you.

Helena Homes is offering youngsters the chance to enjoy access to a brand new skate park this summer, by teaming up with outreach project Ramp Riders.

Local children are encouraged to dig out their bikes, roller blades and skate boards and enjoy making new friends and learning some ‘wheely’ cool new skills and tricks at the skate park. The scheme will offer fun, energetic and healthy activities to entertain children throughout the summer holidays.

Ramp Riders Skate Park will be in your area every Thursday from 3rd June for 20 weeks from 4-7pm at Upland Road car park in Portico.

All you need to do is come along with your bike or skateboard and access to the skate park is completely free.

You must have a consent form signed by your parent or guardian before attending so pop into Thatto Heath neighbourhood office to pick up a form or contact Tanya Roberts on 01744 63 73 83.

Tanya Roberts, Community Engagement Officer at Helena Homes, said: “This event has had a fantastic response from the children involved. They thoroughly enjoy getting involved in all activities, particularly wormery making and seed planting, and it is great for Helena to team up with other agencies and provide opportunities to engage and have fun with the children, whilst educating them on how to grow and plant their own fruit and vegetable seeds, and the importance of recycling.”
