Helena HEADLINES NEXTSTEP

New tenants can now get support in finding employment and training opportunities when they get the keys to their new home. Helena Homes and Greater Merseyside Connexions are working in partnership to promote employment and training opportunities to new tenants as they ‘sign-up’ for their tenancy.

The Nextstep scheme is an advice and guidance service which offers information about jobs and educational courses. In addition, the advisors are able to identify appropriate sources of funding which is available to pay for or support training opportunities.

Training can be from basic courses to more in-depth training and professional qualifications. The advisory team - Chris, Darren and Steve - can refer you to the correct provider and/or support any application if necessary.

The scheme is also open to existing tenants and their families, who can access the help and support provided by Nextstep.

Two significant sources of funding are currently available to support people who have been made redundant. The ‘Response to Redundancy’ funding is available not only to those who have been made redundant but to anyone looking for work. The second source of funding is called ‘Rapid Response’ and is specifically available to those who have been made redundant. There is a limited time in which you can apply for the Rapid Response funding so early action is required.

Another source of financial help comes from Helena from our ‘ICE’ fund. This is available to Helena tenants who need additional help as they enter employment, education and training. It can pay for equipment, clothing for job interviews or additional costs. For information contact your Nextstep advisor.

Case Study 1

Andrew came along to sign a tenancy agreement with Helena, when he was introduced to nextstep adviser Darren Shire.

Hearing about the advice and support available to help people back into work or learning in St Helens, Andrew seized the opportunity to talk about the Forklift Licence he’d been trying to get for years.

Within weeks, Nextstep had found Andrew a free place on the course he wanted and he is now well on his way to the warehousing job he had been hoping for.

“I thought I was only coming along to talk about my tenancy at Helena, I didn’t think I’d come away with my Forklift Licence. I’m really pleased!”

Tenants can get on a new career path with Helena Partnerships.

As one of largest employers in the area, Helena is committed to providing job opportunities and work experience to tenants and local people where possible.

Case Study 2 Helen

“I had a couple of things to sort out on a tenancy agreement with Helena which is when I met Darren from Nextstep. He told me about all the help and support they offer to get people jobs and courses.

“At the time I didn’t think I would ever be interested in changing jobs, but after talking to him, I started to believe that maybe I was too young to write myself off. Darren gave me the confidence to start applying for jobs in care.

“I was amazed how quickly I got an interview and I felt amazing when I got an offer of a job.

“Helena Homes even helped me pay for my CRB checks so that I could start work, and I absolutely love my new job.”
