Woodfin
Water trustees approve Riverside Drive project
By Matt Tate Te Woodfin Water Board ap-
proved a project Monday (July 19) that will replace nearly 12,000 feet of deteriorating water lines along Riverside Drive. Te water district awarded Ar-
den-based contractors Moore and Son the job. Set to begin some time in August, the project is scheduled for six months, although winter weather could impose delays. Replacing the lines from Broad-
way to Craggy Bridge comes with a proposed hefty price tag of $848,235. Approximately 30 percent of the
expense stems from repaving the roads where the current lines runs. In its contract proposal, the district estimated nearly half of the decay- ing lines are under Riverside Drive. Woodfin Sanitary Water and
Sewer District Director Joe Martin characterized the proposal as “lib- eral” and believed the figure could be closer to 25 percent, thus lower- ing paving costs. Another cost-saving feature could
be the decision to replace 1,900 feet of connector line between Vine Street and Jonestown Road. Te largely unnecessary section could be left in place, which would cut another $63,175 off the price tag. Te project has been in discus-
sions for more than a year as Mar- tin worked with the N.C. DOT and federal government stimulus agencies in hopes of co-financing the job. Board members were relieved to
finally move ahead. “It’s time to move on,” Chairman
Keith Snyder said. Riverside Drive lines broke sev-
eral times during last winter’s cold snap, causing outages. Te district received a substantial
down payment on the project last week from the Reynolds Mountain development group. Te group paid the district $260,000 in system fees

for the new downtown project that recently received funding to move forward. Te remaining funds for the Riv-
erside Drive project will come from system reserves, Martin said. In other news, the board moved
its meeting times to 5 pm on the third Monday of every month.
Martin said the water tank at the
Versant development is scheduled to go online in mid-September sup- plying better water pressure to the district’s northern customers. Te tank has been caught in the middle of a legal wrangling since Versant developers filed for bankruptcy in 2008.
Water rebates Te Woodfin Sanitary Water and Sewer District is again offering
rebates for Woodfin water customers replacing appliances with water- saving efficiencies, although rebates amounts have been reduced this fiscal year. Efficient washing machines and low-flow toilets will net a rebate of
$50, down from last year’s mark of $100. Rain installation collection systems will receive a rebate of $100 rather than last year’s mark of $200. Director Joe Martin said the district handed out $1,100 in rebates
last year. Te rebates come in the form of credit on customers’ bills and are only applicable to homeowners replacing their appliances. Interested individuals must contact the district within 60 days of purchase to qualify.
