Church has been sharing the gospel of Christ in and around Asheville for over a century now. In 1907, MABC was first chartered as the North Asheville Baptist Church located at the corner of Forsythe and West Streets. Thirty years later, the church moved to its present location on Merrimon Avenue and voted to change its name to Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church. Over the years, MABC has

taken full advantage of its cen- tralized location. “Being so close to downtown has certainly given this church many great opportunities to reach out to people,” Senior Pastor Daniel Dockery said. “Asheville is a very culturally diverse commu- nity. We believe our church is located here for a reason. We have a unique responsibility to reach out to a lot of different types of people. We want to have a positive impact on the down- town area as well as our North Asheville neighborhoods.” Dockery and his wife Kristi

are both Asheville natives and have been at MABC since last August. Dockery previously served as pastor at Liberty Baptist Church in Virginia for nearly 10 years. Dockery is one of only seven pastors that have led MABC since the 1930s. For 30 years (1965-1995), Dr.

Billy Cline led Merrimon Av- enue through a period of great growth and expansion. During this time, MABC became one of the largest churches in Western North Carolina. It also worked within a satellite growth pro- gram resulting in the start of Woodland Hills Baptist Church in 1985. “For years, Merrimon was really on the cutting edge of so much of what we see today in the local church,” Dockery said. “The past 15 years have been a season of transition for this church. My central focus as pastor now is to lead people in becoming genuine followers of Jesus Christ. In II Peter, we are told that ‘God’s divine pow- er has given us everything we need for life and godliness.’ We don’t want to institutionalize anything or manufacture min- istry. Instead, we are totally dependent on the Holy Spirit to bring our church and those we

accessed facility, MABC is a popular meeting place for nu- merous other local ministries. The Christian Church of Hope, which is one of the area’s largest Russian congregations, meets at MABC each week. They also share office space with Inter- Varsity and Truth Ministries. The church provides a weekday preschool program, as well as a weekly bible study and fel- lowship for area seniors every Tuesday known as Keenagers. MABC actively supports AB- CCM, is involved in local and world missions, and also pro- vides specific ministries for the hearing impaired, widowed and homebound.
